Sorry, bit of a rant probably but does anyone have any experience of the DVLA registration process and their timescales?
Our NA was in storage for over eight years until recently. We got it out, MOTd and insured it and applied to the the DVLA to re-register it onto UK plates and now, thanks to them, it’s back in storage while we wait. They don’t say how much or how to pay the road fund licence on their website so we asked, as they requested we did, in a cover letter that we sent with the many forms and the cheque for the £55 fee that they requested. Weeks and weeks later they sent us a letter to say they’ve rejected and closed our entire application because, get this, we haven’t paid the road fund tax but that we may re apply for registration again if we want. Meanwhile, our car is insured and MOT’d and stuck in our garage because we’re not allowed to use it. The summer ticks by and the car is back in our garage and I’m hoping that the occasional trip of a few meters down our drive, three point turn and back in the garage will keep it ticking over. Is there anything else I should be doing with it? We have a European roadtrip booked in it that starts soon. I did phone the DVLA and a guy said if it’s just tax then “in theory” it won’t take very long to sort. We’ve heard nothing since. Nothing’s showing online for the car - apparently it’s still got no MOT showing and no tax - and as they closed the registration, does this mean we have to wait for it to be done from scratch?
If anyone’s got any experience of this kind of thing, please let me know if we’re in for the unacceptably long haul or just the ridiculously long haul…
Also, it has a tiny hole in the mid-section of the exhaust which was flagged as an advisory on the MOT. We live at the top of a hill and there’s a local garage 350 meters down the road. Would I be allowed to push/roll the car down there to get it fixed to avoid even more time off the road?
If anyone has anything positive to say about the above, I’d love to hear it.
Can’t speak re speed of re-registration onto UK plates
Can speak about experience of ‘Road Fund Licence’ application that is not computerised yet and has to be done via Forms & Fee & Documents to the DVLA in Writing.
In my case it was Reduction in Fees of Road Fund Licence due to Disability. I first qualified for half then full refund of tax
OK I hear you say…Not Relevant to Me as not Disabled
But possibly related ?
So…alternatively Accepted/Rejected/Accepted etc over the years when doing What they told Me to Do re Forms/Fees/Documents in Writing. Get it Returned/Told to Re-apply in Writing with Exactly Same Application/Documents [If you weren’t Disabled to start with re Mental Issues… ]
So this year get my TAX Reminder…here we go again [You still have to apply for Tax even if you don’t have to pay because you are classed as Disabled]
DIFFERENCE: MX-5 now classed as my Disabled Vehicle…Just a few clicks on-line
BULLIT IS NOW COMPUTERISED SO DON’T HAVE TO DO PAPER APPLICATIONS TO DVLA
So my guess would be that the delay will be LACK OF COMPUTERISATION for Re-Registration with UK Plates and Staff having to process Application by Hand…then you have the human element to contend with [different humans rejected my applications even though I submitted the exact same fees/forms/docs]
I wouldn’t worry about an MOT Advisory but chase the Registration onto UK Plates and the Tax Dept
IMPRESSED…YOU ACTUALLY SPOKE TO SOMEONE AT DVLA but to be frank these days the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing in many orgs in my humble opinion
PS…Forgot to Highlight that the delay for me is that Bullit had to be Re-Registered as a DISABLED VEHICLE which is now on her Registration Document V5C Document [Log Book]…Go Figure as It’s me that is disabled not Bullit [apart from corrosion]
e.g. when it was requested I renew my driving licence [took two attempts as the photo-machine wasn’t working the first time I puffed my way into the town centre]
You are allowed to drive it to a place of repair if it has failed.
Therefore, if your home is a suitable place for repair and you can prove that case then no offence would be committed in my opinion.
Likewise, you can drive to a garage/repair shop.
Edit-
As long as the faults are not dangerous, (interpreting that is another debate of course) and that is nationwide policy and the law.
