How to align steering

does anyone got any helpful info or links or vids about putting my steering back together? even if you can’t address every issue here, please feel free to throw in any useful info.

i’m replacing or putting back in: the steering rack, lower steering column, upper steering column, universal joint & the wheel. i had to take it all out to change the UJ. it was on the intermediate steering shaft really really strongly and it wasn’t coming off from below. i had to go in from above. i’ve cleaned the image up a bit, removing bolts etc & part numbers which are distracting.

i didn’t take the steering wheel off. it has 6x 4mm hex fittings. i had a go but it doesn’t have an air bag, so there was no point. indicators & ignition also not taken of.

i’d really like to have the UJ on the steering rack before i try to put it on because getting it on is very difficult. i’m aware the UJ has the notch that has to go into the groove of the intermediate shaft. so not quite sure how that will be possible. it’s also a really tight fit.

please don’t tell me you should have marked this or that with a pen, that bird has flown. it was a nightmare getting the parts off, something i’ve never done before. marking things with pens slipped my mind during the agony.

i’m hoping there’s a method for centering the steering wheel like there is with the rack, eg the ole 2& 10/16 → 1& 5/16 system. i did read somewhere how many turns there are for the wheel, the number escapes me at the moment, i read & save so much stuff.

if anyone wants to suggest an order for doing each part, perhaps just a list of numbered bullet points, it would be great and very much appreciated.

FYI the power steering rack has fewer turns lock to lock than the non powered rack.

thanks, i found that info i referred to earlier, i think this has some interesting info which may be of use to others as well:
