Honest, I have not been drinking, but am wondering if anyone has modified the boot lid to carry a dog in the boot with a port hole it could stick its head through to join in the fun.
Seen small heads popping put of motor cycle panniers before (ever so cute), but never a car boot lid.
I am thinking about getting a dog, and the misses has already advised it won’t be sitting on her lap on our tours of the Highlands.
When you don’t yet have a dog, there is room to plan… I want an Irish Wolfhound, but that requires a Land-Rover to transport. Probably end up with a Retriever sized animal.
Cut a circular hole about 12 inches round, brace the perimeter, stick on a rubber edging, put some insulation for Pooch to sit on, and away we go. Maybe make a magnetically attached cover for the port hole when doggy free. (PRHT boot lid is steel). Must be someone who has done this…
You would need a screen and roof for when the weather is ruff sorry I can’t help myself, this has got me grinning from ear to ear, brightened up my day well done
Many years ago my sister used to drive to work on her moped, come rain or shine. Her constant companion was her Jack Russell tucked inside the anorak with its head sticking out under her chin enjoying the wind carrying bouquets of wonderful new scents. The little dog wore a harness.
I think I would be constantly worried that some idiot might rear end me , and poor fido is sitting there with his head through the hole, like someone in the stocks.
And you couldn’t have it sweltering on a hot day so you would need to make it wear a Sombrero and sunglasses😎
What about one of those tiny dogs sat on the parcel shelf, the faster you go the more they nod in approval ? No doggy doo’s to clean up either…no vet bills
Nods of approval. Like the waves of approval my mate gets on his drive home from nights every morning off the same old guy. Shocking how often he is by the same roundabout as we pass by. It’s a painted roundabout so my pal just goes straight and if anything ends up on the wrong side of the road. He doesn’t hang about either, it’s one of those roundabouts where you can see 900 miles in all directions so you can easily just do it without slowing if there’s no traffic, and at 6am… every time this old boy waves his arms like he’s trying to land an aeroplane and shouts in approval of my mates driving skill. The more he does it the faster the next days driving to gain more approval it’s hilarious
On a serious note. Sorry to be a pain. A Retriever in the boot? Never! For a start where would you put the luggage. Then the dog itself! Wolfhounds are HUGE, Retriever size dogs are VERY LARGE. My neighbour has a Golden Retriever, it stands 26" high, is over 30" long nose to bottom and almost 12" wide. He would fill the boot on a “MX5” and have to lie cross-wise, head to one side or the other, unable to “poke” out of a centrally mounted “dog hole”. He would be unable to sit up, stretch, turn round or curl up all of which a dog must be able to do. To be honest such an idea would no doubt put you in breach of the animal cruelty laws - check with the RSPCA for details. If you a seriously considering taking a dog that size in car car then get something that will have “dog friendly” space, I’m thinking an SUV, Estate/Tourer, 4 x 4, van, p/up, where an area where it can move around can be arranged with mesh panels. Quite frankly a tour of the Scottish Highlands with a passenger, a large dog and luggage in a small two-seater is impossible if the dog is unable to travel safely inside the cockpit. Oh, my neighbour has a BMW tourer with a special dog “cage” installed, another one has his German Shepherd in the back of his Defender. Even my nephew and his wife only took their “Westie” around in their BMW tourer with a special cage for security and freedom. Please don’t take this post badly, I’m just trying to point out the problems to a fellow member so he doesn’t make a very expensive mistake.
I’ve got 2 heavy duty dog seat covers and they work well , as I take my rescue staffy out in the 5 on occasions ,with the lid down , I keep the passenger window up and he has an RAC dog harness that attaches to the seat belt which works quite well ,but he sits on the seat so I can’t take the missus , so we usually have a Mc Donald’s drive through as he likes a quarter pounder without cheese and fries, just have to make sure I clear away the evidence
I used to transport two german shepherds and in my TR7. No problem.
One in the footwell, one on the seat.
The guy at work said it was unfair that my wife had to take the bus. I told him not to be stupid, I can’t send a German Shepard on the bus alone.
Highway code says something like ‘must be restrained and will not cause injury during an emergency stop’.
Wondering if a suitable crate could be placed in the boot area with the boot lid almost entierly cut away. Might not work for a Wolfhound, but might be ok on a Retriever sized beastie.
We use to carry our mongrel in the back of our 1500 Spitfire. One holiday to Devon we had the hood up and the rear window zipped down, when all of a sudden a big blob of dog snot came off his nose flew between us and splattered onto the windscreen.
