I read the Autocar “interview”. Not really an interview, and the speculation was that the next MX5 might be ICE, might be hybrid, might be electric. It depends both on the available technology and what customers (society) wants. Clickbait.
Mazda doesn’t have any of its own hybrid technology. It tried to go that way pre-NC, and didn’t go anywhere. They’re not really into EV having wedded themselves to Skyactiv. I don’t think Mazda can just whip up a RWD hybrid or electric set up on a sub-£20k car than barely shifts 40,000 units a year, without a partner or platform sharing.
Cue MG, who, ironically, probably know more about EV than Mazda now.
