Hyper dipping badges on my new RF

Hi,

I’m due to receive my new RF in a couple of weeks, and want to hyper dip, or plasti dip the badges.

I tried doing it on my current RF and, honestly, it didn’t go well. I ended up removing it, (eventually, and it was a bloody nightmare) and just buying black badges.

I still think that dipping is the way to go, but after the last attempt, I’d rather find somebody that can actually do it properly. Do we collectively know of anybody, preferably in the north west of the UK, (I’m in Manchester) that does this?

I could have googled it myself, but let’s be honest, we’re all here because we love our MX-5s, so I figured that you lovely people might know somebody who has experience of these cars, who could help me out.

I look forward to your feedback. Thanks in advance.

John.

Just for ref - it is HYDRO DIPPING

There are a few around Manchester
Dapper Dippers - Failsworth
WRAPvehicles - Stretford
and many more

Is that different to using Plastdip, which is what I’m thinking of? Hyper Dip is another product made by the same people who make Plastdip, which gives richer blanks, according to the YouTube video I watched.

This is hydro dipping - one of the most common patterns is carbon fibre.

I was referring to this sort of thing.

Not sure how well any paint will stick to the chrome or how long it will last.

There are listings for black front and rear badges on ebay and amazon

Using Plastdip is very well known and lasts for years, it’s just that I did a really poor job last time and I’m hoping to find a fellow MX-5 owner who has done it successfully, who might be selling to help.

By help I mean do it for me, possibly in exchange for money or a beer/beers!

Bump!

Nobody in the north west that could plasti-dip the badges?

I ended up ordering the black badges from Carbonmiata. I’ll post photos when they arrive, if anybody is interested. I didn’t notice, until yesterday, that the characters on the MX-5 badge are not connected, so I’m guessing there aren’t any pin holes. That could make putting the new one on interesting…

I dunno, maybe an idea is just leave it alone?

That’s not helpful. I tried something and it didn’t work, so I asked if there is anybody here who could help me out. I ended up buying the black badges, which solves the problem, but an idea for you might be if you can’t say anything helpful just don’t say anything.

No worries. I guess I just didn’t get out of bed the wrong side this morning.

Have a good weekend :+1:

What finish exactly are you looking for?

I’d be interested in seeing photos of the badges as well as your feedback on them. I think all the badges do have pin holes because I looked into debadging my 2016 ND1 soft top and pin holes was what stopped me.

I really don’t like chrome badges, and the black badges I had on my last mx-5 made it look a lot better, (in my opinion). I just want something a little more subtle than the chrome, especially on that bloody great Skyactiv slab.

All of the badges on my 2019 RF had pins, (I got a custom stick one cover for the Skyactiv badge, so it’s a guess) however the MX-5 badge on the 2024 model is made up of four separate parts, so I’m really hoping that they don’t all have pin holes. I guess I’ll find out when my new badges arrive, and I’ll be sure to post an update when that joyous day arrives.

I know I have a NC, but when I changed mine to black, I stripped the chrome from the plastic. It wasn’t a 5 minute job as you have to soak them in bleach and oven cleaner and the peel the chrome off with a stanley knife. Then it’s just a case of using plastic primer and whatever colour you wish. But some people don’t want to spend the time or have the patience, or aren’t that way inclined. I just enjoy making my own mods as I’m retired and have plenty of time on my hands.

I have the time and patience, but what I lack is the talent to not fkuc it up!

That is the reason I made the original post… To try and find a fellow MX-5 owner who does know how to plasti-dip, and might feel like helping.

As I have said, I’ve solved the problem the way I always do, by throwing money at it, but I have nothing but respect for people like you, who can do this sort of thing and not have it ends up looking like a dog’s dinner. :slightly_smiling_face:
