Firstly, I appreciate that the natural environment for the MX5 is definitely not the motorway but I loathe driving on the M1 in any vehicle under any circumstances. The standard of driving on said route seems to be particularly abysmal, middle lane hoggers being a particular bugbear. I have to drive to Portsmouth from East Yorkshire this Sunday and I am actively planning a route which avoids the M1 as much as possible. Normally, if travelling to a channel port, I opt for the A1 but this takes us further east than is necessary. Anyone else M1 phobic?
Roughly whereabouts in E. Yorkshire are you starting from?
Is there any chance of dropping down through Lincolnshire onto the A46 then down to Leicester.
Pick up the M69 to Coventry. A short stretch of M40 then the A34 around Oxford and pretty much all the way down to Southampton?
I think you’d only be on the M1 for 1.5-2miles.
That’s exactly the route I am looking at! We are only 10 minutes from the Humber Bridge & the A46 is pretty direct. Big fan of the Fosseway so might do a stretch of that south of Leicester.
There might be a couple of pinch points.
Newark around the A1 is usually busy and south of Coventry takes some concentration.
Also the Oxford stretch can be a bit congested depending on when you catch it but south of there the A34 is quite a nice road.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Thank you for your suggestion, very helpful!
I’ve driven from near Newark to Hayling Island / Stokes Bay etc quite a few times. Having tried various ways I think TOG’s suggestion is as good as any. It also avoids the M25. I’m at Hayling a couple of times later this year and will go A46/M69/M40/A34.
