Ideas to improve dull interior of MK1

Hello.  I love my new MK1 and the interior is in great condition, although someone has used gloss polish, which I’m not keen on.  It is, however a bit dull looking.  I need to replace the steering wheel anyway as the standard one is a bit spongey.  I quite like the Mountney wood and chrome one from MX5Parts!

I like the retro look of the MK1’s but can I improve on it?

  • Can I have some ideas about how I can bling it up a bit?
  • Or alternativeley, should I keep it standard?
  • Would chrome trims on the dash and door interiors look a bit tacky?

i did this years ago before even chasnging the radio;

i like it but not to everyone’s taste

Benboy,

I’m about to strip all of this out of my car, including the wood/chrome wheel and chrome vent rings…only after about £30 plus some stamps. It would mean you having to strip out your centre console and the gear surround as there is no way the laminate stuff will come off in one piece (its 3M backing is like concrete!).

If your interested let me know, I’m currently watching a second hand centre console and other dash bits on ebay, it could just be we can do a swap?

Cat not included Wink

I’m generally not a fan of the stick on trim of any description.

I am considering having my seats, tops of door cards and crash pad along the length of the dash retrimmed in ivory or pale grey leather to brighten things up.

Get that handbrake adjusted though!!

Peleton… Hmmmm, don’t think I’d like to strip out my console etc.  Mybe a bit too much veneer for me.  But… I do like your steering wheel!   Someone at work has one similar yet has no other wood trim and strangely it looks very good!  Cheers anyway.  Cool cat too! Big Smile

Tomoose, yeah I know what you mean.  I have seen on MX5Parts eyeball vent ring that are not too shiny (they are called classic)  they look good I think!

Reet… I am going to start with the new steering wheel as that needs to be done.  I am going to see if that’s all that is needed to brighten it up a bit, then maybe just the odd not too shiny trim here and there.  Certainly not going over the top with it.

Handbrake… I thought all MX5’s handbrakes look quite high… my Jasper Conran one is the same…Embarassed

Thanks for all input and more welcome!!!

Well, I’ve made a start with a new steering wheel and hopefully when my chrome vent rings are fitted then it will all look a bit more together.

Hmmm, must get rid of that gloss dash shine!!! Angry  Alco-wipes at the ready!

The wheel’s nice.   It’s a copy of a Momo Prototipo - very cool.  You could do with a Mazda horn push though!

Mine looks like this, with a few bits of shiny stuff:

Thanks Landwomble. Smile

I realised I have put the horn holder ring upside down, so the flared lip on it is pointing into the boss.  Think I’ll change it round tomorrow as I think the horn will fit better.

I can’t spend anymore money Landwomble.Shock

I’m not going to go woody in the interior, just the steering wheel and continue with a few chrome bits.

Yours looks smart LW! Cool

My Berkeley,  just replaced like for like as near as possible to original to freshen it up and a bit of chrome to brighten it up.  Ray

That looks great Ray and in keeping for a Berkeley!  It all looks in excellent condition!Thumbs up

Is that the original Berkeley steering wheel?

Yeah, the small amounts of chrome have just lifted it a bit without going over the top.

Could you say where you bought your steering wheel from please?

Hi Pollyanna, I got the steering wheel from MX5Parts Wink

Spot the difference Big Smile

Just waiting on a chrome hazard/pop-up light switch plate, then it’s all done!  Maybe do the top horizontal side vents?

Enough do you think?
