Identify McGard Locking Wheelnut

The previous owner of my Mk1 lost the key, so before I try brute force or Mazda dealer, does anyone have a list of codes \ images?

All the previously posted McGard links are now 404, and their new replacement order page requires a code. I’ve emailed them a picture also.

@Roadster_Robbie I have seen your expertise in this area!

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 1998 NA
  2. I’m based near: North West
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Locking Wheelnut Code

Our local independent tyre place has been able to remove locking nuts when necessary. They told me it’s not uncommon and Apparently only after they’ve checked every nook and cranny in case the key-nut has been left in an unusual spot; and phoned in case the owner knows the secret!
Probably best not to ask or know how they actually do it! :face_with_peeking_eye:
They just charge for a new set of locking nuts - non-OEM so not a king’s ransom…

That is definitely McGard pattern.
I know as just sold a key and three nuts on ebay.
Plenty of others on there cheap.

Can you get a sharper photo at all?

Does it look like either of those?

Certainly, will try to take a better picture this evening. Thanks!

(Yes, that does look like the picture of the first one - will compare against the real thing this evening. Thanks again @Roadster_Robbie )

I’ve added a picture with another option

Wow, that is confusing; the inner shape very similar but the outer shape around the two wings quite different. Here are the ones I sold.
I’d say that most listed and indeed mine appear more like the first of yours Robbie.
Very confusing if McGard make two similar patterns that are not interchangeable.

New picture… thankyou all!

Looks like a 912L, I’ll get a photo of the key tomorrow for reference.

If you are right then you are the ‘saddest’ person in the world. I just love it.

P.S. At Appleyards on Canal Road in Bradford the Sikh parts man knew every part number and its location. He was truly awesome.

You can email McGaurd your picture and they will let you kow the correct one and sell you one…

That’s what I did when I lost mine.

I’m not that confident in my assessment from the photo to be honest. In the metal, when taking them off on a daily basis I was usually spot on. Each of the 5 common Mazda ones had a certain feature that I’d recognise. 910 is quite symmetrical with a point on top, 911 is symmetrical and sort of tapered, 912 is tapered but with a hump on top, 913 is triangle shaped and 166 is symmetrical with a flat top.

The first photo I posted is a 910 and the second a 166.

I’m beginning to wonder if ian_c’s locker is not a Mazda supplied one or one of the later ones that wasn’t as common.

If I view ian_c’s second photo with the rust patch at the bottom, it looks like a 912.

912, not so sure now…

Today has been an interesting day!

Started at an MX5 independent - only had a small number of keys, no luck!

Dropped in on Perry’s Mazda - can’t help won’t help… not even an effort or offer to book it in, they simply said “no”.

Bolton Motorpark Mazda were great, parts manager went through three boxes of “master keys” - but none worked! The “closest” set had seen some use and were pretty chewed up though! 10/10 for effort.

During the day, McGard sent a couple of “where are you based” emails, then have stated they can send a key based on the photo - €21, just had to send them a scan of V5 and driving licence. Fingers crossed!

I’ll update here for anyone else coming across the same task! Thanks again to all with suggestions.

You can get a removal tool for around £20 on Amazon.

Indeed - but independent specialist tried to get one to bind without luck, just grabbed the spinning collar on these.

I’d be interested to know the code of the key when it arrives.

I had this below kicking around in the garage, checked anyway, don’t think it looks close and not even one supplied for a Mazda. Well I did find it at the roadside.

Just to bring this to a close. McGard replacement key arrived 10mins ago, and fits perfectly.

@Roadster_Robbie The magic number was 907.

Thanks all for your input!
