Simple things first - check you haven’t got the Air Con on as this will increase the rpm (as well as making the car feel sluggish…). (Button out is “off”, button in with fan on is “on” [see blue light too]).
Not sure about the 1.8 Mk1 but the 1.6 has a wax-stat dashpot on the throttle lever stop. This holds the throttle plate slightly open when cold and shuts it off when warmed up. In order for this to work properly there needs to be a little slack in the throttle cable. So check that the dashpot moves freely (if you have one) and that there is enough free play in the throttle cable for the throttle plate to close properly when warmed up. Other things to look at are a possible vacuum leak on the induction side, water temperature sensor (screwed into the cylinder head under the coil pack) and idle air control valve.
Hi Chaps, idle now sorted…thanks for the advice and pointers. There was a leak on the induction, sorted that then set the base idle. Running sweet now.
Been in to my mates garage for a spot of work. Just had new cam belt kit fitted. Replaced ancillary belts for good measure.
Oli leak on sump was pretty heavy, garage replaced a number seals along with rocker cover gasket. Dry as a bone now.
Feel I am getting this car closer to where I want it to be. A set of NGK long reach plugs on their way along with Magnecor 80 ignition lead set. This combination gets good reviews on MX5 parts so though it worth the investment.
Next job is to source new rear suspension. One of the original Bilsteins is in place and is very soft and affecting handling. The other rear shocker is of an unknow brand and vintage! I am planning to replace. Looking for most cost effetive options…may try and get a good second hand full set and replace front and rear. If not able to find at right price will probably opt to replace both rear units.
Any suggestions regarding options for the suspension would be much appreciated.
Just hoping for some better weather now!
Planning a trip up to the lake district in December which will be the first opportubnity to let the car stretch its legs…can’t wait.
Having a mix of shocks isn’t a good idea, so changing them is a must. I have a set of Koni adjustable shocks with standard Mazda springs, set on the lowest setting gives a nice ride height and very predictable handling, along with a comfortable ride. Mx5 parts do them—
Thanks Geoff, I will check out the suspension avialble from MX5 parts. I have had a few bits off them recently, impressed…nice service and quick delivery. Cheers Murphy
