Probably a very simple solution but I cannot see which gear the car is in when it is dark! LOL I know! Is there a light and if so how do I change the bulb? Cannot see anything in the Haynes manual. Car is a 1993 Auto (of course)

Why do you need to see, surely you know, manual gear levers are not illuminated either.
We have 4 cars in the family,all automatic.The other three have some form of gear indication,either a light or an indicator on the display,it could be easy in the dark to select the wrong gear!
It should illuminate. Duff bulb? Mine does, though weakly.
I also have a “bread-van” Reverse warning beep…so apart from that you are either in Park ( the best handbrake in the world!) or just going forward.
Slipping out of N your in D next along the gate of course so I don’t really think you are in any danger!
Just stick your right leg onto the brake pedal 'till your sure
