Decided to treat myself to an IL Motorsport cobra style rear view mirror. It was 198 euro which converted into a much more reasonable £158 so I ordered it. Quite pleased with that until today when I got a bill from UPS for another £52!!! This makes a reasonably priced mirror now a very expensive one.

I believe the limit is £135
20% vat and 2.5% duty.
I had gear and handbrake gaiters from them last month, was about half price of MX-5 parts, £95

A “benefit” of being outside “The European Customs Union”, but you can claim the domestic German(?) VAT back in you want.
They should deduct the German VAT, but always check.
I remember the days when it was so much simpler.

For invoices within the European Union, any company is obliged to charge VAT unless they have the customers VAT number, in which case they do not need to charge VAT. As the end user customer is an individual with no VAT number, VAT should be charged. However what the situation is now that we have left the European duty area blah blah and are no longer and member, I have no idea what happens now… I presume that the German company does not charge VAT directly, but the Shipper will pay the VAT on your behalf to HMRC on import, as they will want their cut…

Oh well, lesson learned. It will be here on Thursday. Let’s hope it is a very nice mirror! IL Motorsport stuff is usually very nice quality.

I’m selling MX-5 accessories on eBay. Since the end of June any buyer in the EU sees a price 20% higher on both the item and shipping. I don’t make any more, in fact I pay an additional fee for eBay handling payment on an international order. To say it has hit my sales is an understatement.
Apparently it’s called “Taking back control”.

I’ve had the same but the other way around, ordered some carbon fiber kit from easy composite, but since I’m outside of Britain they sent me my kit without VAT, so I’ve got it for 45€ and had to pay an extra 23€ for the custom/VAT !!
At least now you can reflect on your purchase, with added nostalgia.
