Improving performance

I bet there’s been a load of views on this, but could not find any. Without going turbo, what do people think of ECU remap ? Worth it for ~10% increase in power, or a waste of time ? Not a speed merchant, but would like a bit more acceleration when overtaking.

Depends on the model you have. I believe it is utterly worthless on the Mk1.

sorry, should have mentioned, Mk 3.75

I had a remap done, however also had 4 to 1 manifold and Racing Beat power pulse silencer fitted at the same time. I went from 158bhp to 178bhp on paper.I know that the added parts will have made a difference to the mapping, so you may not get the same bhp increase.

I and others members that have been in the MX5 have felt a difference in acceleration, I have not done a 0-60 time as don’t feel the need too.  Insurance wise only added 27 quid to my cover. Had the work carried out by http://www.mx5expert.com who supplied graphs before and after.

I did not want to push my luck getting more power from the MX5 as wife also drives it and is more than happy with current change.

That’s great. Approx how much did it cost ? I appreciate the manifold change helps the air throughput. For a straightforward remap I’ve been quoted ~£200. Not contacted the insurers yet, though know one needs to do it. Thanks.

£200 seams i bet weird i am sure the ecutek licence is £400 without the new tune

i paid £1000 for mine with manifold

Hi there – In the club magazine Soft Top Hard Top for October 2017 (Vol 23 No.5) – on page 14-15

There is a really nice article which seems just the thing for someone thinking of improving the performance of a Mk3. The writer seems to be coming from the same direction as you - he has tried a remap without a manifold upgrade and is considering further performance upgrades. Maybe worthwhile contacting him if possible - or at least getting hold of the article.

You won’t get much gain on an NC without replacing the factory exhaust manifold, quite  few company’s off this with a remap to gain around 20bhp on the 2.0l

Thanks for the advice guys. Will start saving…

Firstly, as you do not say how old you are and what NCB you have or were you are in the UK?.. changing the manifold, back box etc will put it up. I would phone round and price that before doing anything as you may stay stock after a few quotes…

Then there is the remap, have it done by a specialist as £200 seams really cheap and you will not feel any difference if you only have that done!

As stated by another member you will not have much change from £1000, but that will include the 4 to 1 manifold I would have thought. Lastly you will loose some MPG if you are worried about that sort of thing. I drive my MX5 like I stole it, so MPG is not high on the list of priorities.

no need for more power ,    just use the handbrake going into corners !  Great

There’s often little point in remapping alone, on any car, unless the manufacturer hadn’t done the job properly in the first place. Thankfully, these days they tend to do a better job than some did in the past. The way to get more performance is to get more gas flow through the engine, hence the need for other work such as manifolding, or work on the cylinder head.

Then do the remap as required to suit the work done.

Hi guys, had the car NC 3.75 2lt since April last year. We love the car but coming from modern turbo deisels found it seems to lack pick up. Yes I know there is a massive difference and that the car is designed to push the Rev counter and when you do it is so much fun to drive. But I was also looking to see how to get a bit more low down. I ended up going to see Lee at Goperform after the rally last year. I have had the upgrade done exhaust system including manifold and the remap, I did not go for BHP but spoke to Clive to see what he could do for getting the torque in at lower RPM. The guys have done a great job, the car is much better and only lost 5  or so of the 180 bhp on offer. I do not have the figures with me but peak torque was 150 some thing in at 2300 rpm, I think.

Yes it did cost, but the guys really did a great job listened to what I wanted and mapped it to suite. I have since gone back up, Lee has quieted it down a little and I have started using high octain fuel, Clive remapped this time for BHP so I could give that a try. Clive dose not know yet but I am going back up to change it back to the torque setting he set befor.

Great bunch of guys with patients to work with you can’t recommend them enough give them a call they will talk you through the options. Hope this helps
