Indicator noise, or lack of it.

The one thing I dislike about my Mk 2.5 is the indicators.

The stalk sounds as if you’ve just broke it every time you indicate and the warning lights are a dull green, and hidden behind the top of the steering wheel.

Because of my slightly sporty home made exhaust can and a touch of industrial deafness I often don’t hear the click of the winker relay and twice now I’ve

come off a roundabout with a left indication that hasn’t auto cancelled and had a car pull out from the next left turning, thinking I was turning in.

So the choice is; drive like the local taxi drivers and totally ignore the indicators, using the excuse that “how can I indicate when I’m holding a phone to my ear”,

or; fit buzzers into the circuits.

I’ve fitted buzzers. £3.98 for two and get one free from eBay. What can go wrong?

Cut into the circuit at each rear light cluster and stuck the buzzers up against the seat bulkhead.

If they get on my nerves through being too loud I’ll stuff a duster in  the gap to muffle them.

Good idea Paul

I drove up the M5 in my old VW Golf yesterday and had the same issue. Using indicators on a straight road = good chance of no cancellation.

Bad hearing from clay pigeon shooting, etc and an obscured indicator light/bright sunshine meant my other half whose hearing is good had to cancel the indicators for me on several occasions.

Hope the buzzer does the trick without being too annoying - failing that another light in a better position is a thought. Just thinking that the buzzer might drive you mad if you had your hazard lights on any period of time.

I also need to do something because as you say this does potentially create a problem for other road users.

I’ve been wondering about this for a slightly different reason: my new (to me) Mk.1 has a Nardi Steering wheel which is smaller than my previous one’s Momo, and now the top of the wheel rim completely obscures the green indicator lamps from anyone of my height.  A result was that I didn’t spot that it had an intermittently faulty flasher unit for, well, goodness knows how long.

I see various options including a foamectomy on the drivers seat to sit lower down but the one which appeals to me is to add a pair of ‘repeater’ bright green LEDs below the instrument binnacle.  I reckon I could set them well back either side of the steering wheel cowl, in the gap between that and the instrument binnacle.

I did the foamectomy and that lowered me an inch / 25mm but that was so I can wear a crash helmet.

I’ve got this vision of me doing my first track day, and doing ten laps of Snetterton with my winker going, only noticing when I come back into the pits.

The shame of it all.
