I can’t really justify the cost of the K & N Typhoon induction kit for my mk2.5 sport, but just in case I can get a used one for right money, what is the best set up for hillclimb and sprint?
I come from a bike background and when you put individual K & N filters you had to re jet it and it robbed your midrange, so would you have to have the fuel injection modded or does it auto compensate
One other option is a K & N panel filter in the standard airbox
The typhoon is just a noise generator, for performance you need something that doesn’t collect air from just above the exhaust manifold, plenty of kits with a heat shield. Even then performance gains are minimal, on its own it will do little but along with other mods ‘every little helps’.
Best bet is a performance filter in the original box, or a proper cold air intake system
Thanks Rubberduck, I think a K & N in the original airbox is the way to go then and save the extra cash towards a lightened flywheel that will have a better effect
As mentioned, any system that takes intake air from within the engine bay will reduce performance due to the reduced density of the hot air. Stick with the original (cold) air intake, but I wouldn’t personally fit an oiled K&N filter in a vehicle as it risks contaminating the airflow meter.
Thanks JS46 for that, I never considered the oiled filter so think I will stick a standard good quality paper air filter in or may be an oe one depending on the price.
Cheers
Geoff
Never had a MAS issue in 12 years of ownership of a 96 Mk1 with hot wire MAS, and HKS,Oiled ARC filter/ oiled cotton filter. Can has gone from 90k kms to 260k kms, and in fact arrived in the country with a HKS filter in 2000.
Real world tests of K&N filters show they let in around 0.14% more air than a standard filter so basically they’re no better. Induction kits aim to suck more air in but without a decent filter will simply suck more cr*p into your engine which is not a good thing. Plus if you have hot air from within the engine bay then that contains less oxygen so you get less efficient fuel burn. There’s a good reason why turbos have intercoolers! In other words, don’t waste your money on induction kits unless you want more noise because that’s about all induction kits are good for. However, if noise is your thing then it’s probably better to fit a big sport exhaust as you won’t lose performance from that.
Thanks for your answer Pete George, good food for thought and the way this thread and the same in other forums all think the same way, I have just ordered an IL Motorsport standard filter for the airbox and that will keep me happy. As for exhausts back in the day when I had a modded MK1 Escort there were exhaust manufacturers everywhere but when I try and find a decent proper full race system for my NBFL there just seems a lot of boy racer exhausts as well as the bargain Ebay Stainless systems, I know the NB has good headers so was going cat back system so have found a Sportex system so will look a bit more into that

Does anyone have any actual real world data on these? ITG dynoed several of these type of intakes on my car years ago and found they all robbed the car of power.
