Installing Air/Fuel gauge

Morning

Can you let me know the easiest place to get a signal for an air/fuel gauge? I’m guessing a wire off the ECU rather than a wire near the hot exhaust…

I’ve got a supercharged 94-plate mk1 1.8…

What wideband setup have you got? From this the best advice can be given re: suitable wiring. I guess you have a o2 sensor, wideband unit and guage?

You’ll want the o2 sensor to be away from the manifold so it is not heat affected. Many people put the sensor in the exhaust pipe under where the gear stick is roughly, you can drop it through the hole in the body for the gearstick etc. Wiring for power, ground etc should be detailed in whatever kit you have. But I took power from the stereo system. Ground was at the ecu.

The o2 sensor needs to be between the 10 o clock and 2am positions so that moisture can’t drop onto it which would destroy the sensor.

Cheers.

Its just a narrowband gauge, rather than a wideband…

Hello,

Just checked on the gauge - all I need to do is connect it to the o2 sensor - it doesn’t come with a seperate exhaust sensor.

So - what colour wire from the ECU connects with the o2 sensor input?

thanks

I can’t help with what colour the cable is on that year of car. But if you ask around someone can probably supply you with a mazda manual in pdf for your year which would have the wiring info in it.

TBH though I wouldn’t bother with a narrowband setup as the information it supplies will be pretty useless. A narrowband only sees 0v-1v so there is next to no detail in the information that is supplied, probably about 14-15.5 to 1 afr, outside of this range it can’t show you any information, so would either show the highest (15.5) or lowest figure (14) which may not be an accurate representation of what your actual afr is at a given point in time.

. A typical wideband operates over 0v-5v and would show reading from around 9-20 to 1 afr depending on the make and model. It would make more sense to go for a wideband setup if you want useful information.

Got it sorted - red / blue on 94.

TBH it was to fill a 52mm hole in the dash and it was the best choice from the range available at my budget…
