Instrument Bulbs

Hi,

I have just bought a MK2.5 1800 Sport and need help in finding Instrument Bulbs.

Mine are Orange but I have at least two blown bulbs.

Any Idea where I can get replacement ones.

I have looked at and phoned a couple of parts suppliers but no joy.

Or are they generic to all cars…

Jeff.

MK2.5
1) - Yasaki 158 x 4(T10, 3w/504)
2) - TSD 74 x 9(T5, 1.4w)
4) - TSD 74 x 1 with green cover(T5, 1.4w)
3) - TSD 80 x 1(T5)

The T10 is the same appearance as wing side indicator bulb. number plate illumination bulb, sidelight bulb, etc but lower wattage. These seem to be used as the general instrument cluster illumination.

T5, 1.4 watt should be easy to find. These are typically used to highlight a specific function, not for general illumination.

The colours are created by rubber skins that cover the body of the bulb. These can easily be removed from your blown bulbs are refitted to standard clear replacements.

Coincidentally I was just logging on to ask about dashboard bulbs for a mk2.5 sport!

From the reply I’m assuming there are 15 bulbs behind the dash, including warnings etc. - but which are which?

On mine it’s the instrument-illumination bulb on the far right (behind the temp gauge) that has gone.

Could I ask specifically, what type of bulb needed in this case, and how many in total to buy to replace all instrument-illumination lights? I’m guessing there are 4 of these, so it’s probably the Yasaki 158, but can someone confirm?

And have I understood correctly that these bulbs are actually clear, and I just swap a red/orange rubber skin from the old bulb?

Thanks!

Fitting t10 501 5w bulbs could present problems with overheated circuit board and plastic surround. I would think 3 watt 504 bulbs would be more suitable.

I have just tested a Yashika 158 DO 2P bulb versus a standard 5 watt version and there is a discernable brightness difference.

Can’t find any reference but could well be 3.4 watts - second time wrong today!

Will update my reference.

Just thought to check my Haynes manual… for instrument illumination it says “3.4 capless” - so 3.4 watts, not sure what capless means.

Anyone found where to buy these yet? And whether they are coloured, or clear with coloured sleeve?

Also, what exactly needs to removed to get at these bulbs - the Haynes manual says steering wheel needs to come off (and this seems to involve all sorts of procedures with airbag etc) - but can it be done just removing steering column cowling, then instrument cluster, leaving steering wheel in place?

MX5 parts has the bulbs.

I know what capless means but that is a big secret!

For those too lazy to bother doing a google search this shows how it is done.

Thanks for the vid link. I’d found one earlier, but in the one I found he had the steering wheel off (which Haynes manual also says you need to do) - nice to see this isn’t necessary!

However I’ve just check MX5 parts again, these bulbs are not in the “mk2/2.5 - electrical - lighting - mk 2.5” section. Where are you seeing them?

btw, have been told elsewhere that 501 T10 5w should be fine, no problems with increased wattage.

In that case please try them out and get back to us

I did phone them last week before starting this thread. The person I talked too could not find the correct bulbs for my MK2.5.

He suggested I fill out a request form on their web site.

But it looks as if I knew the correct bulb part numbers they could have sold them to me.

Amazon also has bulbs.

Jeff.

I can find three listings for capless instrument bulbs on MX5Parts…

https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/dash-bulb-large-clear-type-mazda-mk1-p-1844.html

https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/dash-bulb-with-green-mazda-mk1-p-1845.html

https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/dash-bulb-small-clear-type-mazda-mk1-p-1846.html

Surprised that MX5Parts are unable to advise re MK2 and MK2.5 but the general feeling is that these are the right varieties and approximate power for all cars MK1 - MK2.5

The smaller bulb listed last is titled as 3.4 watts but described as 1.2 watts - could possibly be 1.4 watts. Perhaps this listing confirms that MX5Parts are not in a position to correctly advise but do have the correct bulbs for our cars.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but still not changed my dash bulbs as been busy (and only 1 has actually gone)…

However am about to order some, but can’t decide between 501 (5w) or 504 (3w)

Neither seem quite the original specs (3.4w) but 504 closest in wattage. However most people seem to be putting 501 LED’s in with no problem.

Presumably 501 LED’s a bit brighter, but not so much brighter it’s a distracting?

And whether I go 501 or 504, is there any reason NOT to go for an LED bulb?

(they’re for a mk2.5)

The Mazda parts system is a waste of time as they advise that all the cars from 1998 to 2005 use the same 1.4watt small bulbs and 3.4watt larger bulbs but do not advise the colour of the filters and who has coloured bulb filters in their spares box.

In fact a number of the Mk2.5 cars have red covers over some their bulbs and the Mk2 and Mk1 had green covers over some of their the bulbs.

Autolink has them all here

http://www.autolinkmx5.com/instruments-44-c.asp

There is so much confusion over numbers just take the instrument panel out and search google for instructions.

Count the number of bulbs you need by size and colour. I would change the lot and it is expensive to do the lot and order from Autolink.

Autolink are also confusing things by saying the wattage of some of the bulbs is 31.4 watts.

Yes, 31.4w, I saw that typo! Almost a Spinal Tap Stonehenge measurement there…

Mine’s a 2.5 with red bulbs, but I’d prefer green - will call Autolink and check, but it looks like this would work, even tho it’s labelled mk1/2: http://www.autolinkmx5.com/bulb-mazda-mx-5-mk2-instrument-panel-illumination-34w-green-nc105543y-9905-p.asp

They do also have the red (which are labelled mk2.5) if I give up on going green.

I’ve also seen these, tho not sure if they might be too big as they’re 27mm? https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/collections/12-volt-collection/products/2-x-glb504-t10-led-capless-wedge-bulbs-classic-car-gauge-dashboard?variant=41593885322

You have seen one vendor that sells items that will fit and another that sells items that may or may not fit.

The choice looks sensible to me to go for the vendor that sells items you know will fit.

At the moment, it does seem obvious that the OE bulbs are the sensible choice… however if anyone could confirm whether a 27mm LED would fit, I’d rather have these as they draw less power, and have longer life.

OK, so in case it helps anybody, I was recommended some LEDs that definitely should fit:

and for the T5 size, just in case I change any of them too:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182697545569

Have ordered these, so will report back if they work!

I went with the LED Option in the end.

Direct replacements for T10 501 5W (3.4W)

As they are LED they use less current and don’t get hot.

I ended up buying two lots of Red ones from Ebay.

The mistake was not checking the overall length.

From experience make sure they are shorter then 28mm.

The ones I bought were just too long to fit into Instrument panel.

The second lot were 26.2mm overall length, these fitted.

My White Instrument panel is now glowing a nice Orange/Red at night.

While the Dash Cover is off I’m going to try some replacement LED T5 lights for the Instrument Indicators/Warning/Information Bulbs. These should arrive this week.

Also as its LED Lights going in a standard bulb fitting there is a 50:50 chance of fitting it the wrong way round. So don’t screw anything in and refit panels until you have checked they work.
