insurance for 19 year old

I recently purchased a 96 mx 5, im 19 years old and have 18 months driving experience but no claims discount, not due to a claim but due to first year being a named driver and stopping policy half way through second year.

the cheapest quote I have found was admiral at £1900. this is with my mother as a named driver (seems to make it cheaper).

however most specialist insurance companies refuse to ensure me due to the car being a “sports type car” or one company even refered to it as a “dangerous vehicle”.

Just wondering if anyone has had the same trouble or knows where younger drivers can be insured.

I have already checked the comparison sites, the club ensurer snd RH classic car insurance.

Hi, wish I was 19 again, but had the expensive bit the last few years with our 2.

Like you found, they ended up with Admiral and Elephant (same group along with Bell and Diamond but they may go for different risk/ages I think).

Do try different comparison sites as one in particular is part owned by a large insurer… We found Compare the Market the best and if you also have another good driver you can add it may be cheaper still. A friend found Swiftcover were surprisingly good but no phone calls just web I think.

Main issues apart from that seem to be postcode, work, and no mods to the car. If you get a good honest quote click it through and pay online as we’ve twice had them strangely disappear when we telephoned to pay instead.

thanks, I think this is going to take a while of searching. After recieving a quote of £1900 from admiral through compare the market, i called them up and they assured me this was the cheapest they could offer. I have now just filled out a money supermarket quote with exactly the same details and recieved a quote of £1700… from admiral, not quite sure how that works :s

Hear, hear. My previous car was a '94 Mitsubishi FTO, grey import with 12 (non-power) modifications. I paid £640 insurance last year. Now I have a '06 MX5, unmodified UK model, worth significantly more money. Fully comprehensive indurance is £180 (from Admiral).

Grey imports and modifications inflate insurance a lot.

interesting… I got a fully comp quote (inc. spares, trailer, euro use, trackday cover, recovery anywhere) for my car when its finished (ALL modifications, the only standard parts being the wishbones, lights, pedals and door handles) for £387. And that’s with no bonus. Its a special vehicle policy, although they also do sports vehicle policies for cars with less mods. It could pay you to actually do a track day or two!! Thumbs up
