Hello! Sorry if this seems like a silly post, but I wanted some advice on getting insurance at a decent price for my 93 mx5, I’m 19 and I passed my test about 7 months ago. I bought my mx5 before I passed my test so I had no idea how high the insurance would be. Obviously I’m too attached to it to let it go, but I’m not getting any quotes under 8k a year which is way too much are there any ways I could get it lower? I don’t want to be paying more than £250 a month because it’s too much, I am going to be calling some of the insurers that are partnered with this club, but seeing as Adrian Flux quoted me 13k a year for third party only I doubt it’ll take down the price that much. Its just frustrating as I have done quotes for a 96 model with a bigger engine, same safety features and more bhp and I have been getting quotes of around 200 a month to pay. Sorry for this long post, I just want to be able to drive my car :)!
It’s going to be very difficult for someone your age. They want new young drivers to be driving around in a 1 litre car, even then it’s going to be expensive to insure.
Best advice if you haven’t already tried it is get your parents (assuming they drive) on any policy you want as named drivers. I did this for my daughter although she was 28 yrs old when she passed her test her first policy had a high cost.
Insurance prices now are bonkers high, for new drivers absolutely astronomical.
Yea, sadly I have tried adding my mum to the policy as shes the only one who can drive. I think I have tried just about anything to get the price down, it still just makes me mad that I can get a more powerful one and insure it for cheaper because its 3 years younger was just hoping someone had a miracle way to get it down
i doubt that you can get it down.
try to find a dirt cheep 96 plate and run it for a year to get your no claims or get a 50 cc scooter and insure that for a year and get some no claims
while doing that you can work on your on 93 whilst its of the road and get it REALLY NICE for when you can insure it at a good price
As someone who is also 19 now been driving a year and was originally looking at a NA. It is incredibly hard I got offered an import NA not long after I passed my test but it was impossible to insure. As others have said your best bet would be to find an alternative to insure to get that essential 1 years NCD. My NC with 1 years ncd is around 140 a month granted now without a black box.
For context with prices this was shortly after passing my test, was last year and insurance seems to have gone up across the board but on an 03 1.4l Peugeot 206 I was paying just under 200 a month with a black box. That was with 2 other family members as named drivers with 25 yrs+ driving experience and no claims.
yes, prices did go up last year.
my renewal price was double that of the previous year.
jumped from 750 to 1500 and that was with an extra year of NCD
Have you tried the Club insurance scheme? No guarantees though it could be worth a try.
sorry just saw this, hope you get somewhere with it
Going to be giving them a ring later today, I really hope they can help
One thing to bear in mind is that No Claims Discount does not accrue on this policy. Any you already have is ‘parked’ for the duration of the policy and returned to you when you leave. For someone starting out this may be more of an issue than someone who has a few years in place, alternatively another insurer may just take your increased years of experience and give you the benefit of that.
Unfortunately I found this when trying there myself you have be older then I believe 24.
just tried them, being 19 is fine but I needed to have my license for over 2 years
Odd. Was this Peter James? I tried them myself when renewing my policy a few weeks back.
Always worth a call though, will have to try them again next year if they are still partnered with the club.
Hi.
I’m sorry that we were unable to offer you a competitive insurance quotation.
Regards,
Dan,
I have to admit I wondered what was going on in your ‘for sale’ thread with the whole swap for a '96 from a '93 because it seemed so strange that the same car but newer would be cheaper insurance.
I have never (since being a learner) had a no claims discount, none of the policies I’ve had offer one, so I no longer worry about such things being an option.
Maybe you could…
Get yourself as a named driver on your Mothers’ insurance and use her car more than the MX-5.
Get quotes for very limited (maybe 1000 or 2500 per year) mileage based insurance which will bring the price down.
-or-
Get your Mother to sell her car, and buy the MX-5 off you, then as long as she drives it the most, you can drive it too on her policy and you can go 50/50 on the costs
Oh and you could try FootmanJames for their classic car policy, if you haven’t already tried them. You can see how much it would be with agreed value since you reckon your car is only worth £1200.
My premiums decreased dramatically once I reached 30.
Its still a bit strange to me but I’ve been told by someone in insurance that although the 93 is less powerful and smaller engine, they are more common in accidents.
I am already a named driver on a car and its not bringing down the insurance at all and neither is the low millage, as I’ve tried that because I wouldn’t be driving it too often anyway.
I have also tried her as the main driver and me as a named driver and I was still getting unaffordable quotes of 8k plus :(!! If she was the only driver it would be £15 a month
Footmanjames wouldn’t offer me a quote as far as I remember
Sadly it’s not worth the wait, I could be waiting for years until I can get insured on it which will possibly deteriorate the car more as it wont be driven, I’d also like to have one that I can drive but can’t keep two, thank you for your reply tho
Sorry to see you in this chicken and egg situation, long shot but have you asked if a pass plus or Roadsmart IAM certificate will help reduce your premiums ? Hope you get on the road soon,
