We’ve got our NA 1.8iS on a classic policy with Hiscox via Performance Direct which suits us well. But we’ve decided to go on a little road trip to Brittany for a few days soon so I contacted PD to inform them that we need EU cover and they said they can’t upgrade it so we’ve only got 3rd party while over there and I’m not really prepared to risk it (I returned to my Eunos minus its passenger side in a supermarket carpark there about 20 years ago!). Any recommendations as to what I can do to get fully comp? I didn’t think you can insure a car with two providers at once. Can you buy a week’s worth of just EU cover with EU Breakdown as well? If so, any recommendations?
Obviously I don’t know when your insurance renews, but the Club’s policy would probably suit you down to the ground if you join the MX-5 Owners Club. Maybe you could cancel your current policy and take out one with the club insurance scheme or take out another policy (if there’s not long to go on your current one). I don’t know much about insurance, but surely you could have 2 policies if you wanted to but you’d only be able to claim on one in the event of a claim.
Thanks for this. Unfortunately/typically, the policy autorenewed about 10 days ago for another year but I’ll certainly look at the Club policy.
We’ve recently come back from a 2-week trip to France. Our insurance already covered us for the EU, but we had to pay for a month’s EU breakdown cover (that seems to be the minimum time frame). Next time I will look at combined insurance and breakdown for both UK and EU as going to Tuscany next year
That’s interesting. Are you with the Club Insurance (Peter James)? Their price was pretty good and I just rang them but got cut off when they picked up. However, their list of what can be covered doesn’t say anything about EU cover so I’m wary of that and need to check with them. There is EU Breakdown Cover which could be useful as our NA is now 31 years old but, touch wood, she won’t let us down.
No I’ve not look at Peter James yet (only had the MX-5 since March last year). I’m with SAGA for car insurance and Eversure for breakdown cover
Hi.
Please feel free to give us a try for short term insurance. We have schemes that can provide additional EU cover.
Regards,
Dan.
Last time I looked at the beginning of the year insurance companies no longer issue green cards I believe this means one’s insurance already covers trips abroad. Worth checking to be sure but my understanding is a copy of one’s insurance certificate is all one needs. Breakdown cover I take out a years worth everytime I need it.
Not sure how other insurance companies deal with this but Direct Line certainly provide travel to Europe - HOWEVER, it’s only 3rd party as standard so not something I’d be happy with - They add fully comp for the duration of any trips (they require each country to be stated) for a pretty nominal fee. As you say, Green Card is not required for EU and a number of other non-EU countries but I understand that countries a bit further afield, such as Turkey, do need a green card. Certainly always worth checking with individual policies/companies when travelling abroad.
This is Direct Line’s normal take on European cover as stated on their policy (without the extra fully comp cover).
'You’re covered for claims from other people for injury, damage to their car or property.
You’re not covered for accidental damage, fire or theft of your car.’
I think there’s a mandatory EU cover on most policies these days by which they have to provide the minimum cover which is 3rd party only and I’d prefer more cover than that.
I’ve got another company lined up with a policy due to start soon that will cover me for this trip and has unlimited mileage too so that’s good.
