The last MX5 I owned was a Mark 1 but sadly it gave up the ghost a few years ago. Now looking to get a Mark 3. Clearly the 2.0i costs a bit more to run than the 1.8i in terms of tax and fuel consumption, but can anyone advise whether the insurance cost is significantly higher? Likewise, is the 2.0i ‘Sport’ variant more expensive to insure than the ‘regular’ 2.0i’? Thanks in anticipation…
I think it depends more on your own age, claims/offences record and location rather than engine size. I get quoted almost exactly the same price by Aviva whichever car I am insuring, GT86 2.0, MX5 Mk2.5 1.8 and Ford Puma 1.7.

I wonder why you post this question here when you can go on an insurance comparision site like confused.com or any other and get as many quotes as you want and then just go back into the details and change the car or car spec and hit get prices again.
That would give you actual quotes rather than peoples opinion but that’s just the way I do it!
All car models have an insurance group value (the higher the more expensive) which you can find easily enough (autotrader etc).
Price comparison sites are good, but won’t include some direct insurance and the specialist brokers.
I’ve had wildly varying quotes for both a Mk3 Sport, from sub £300 to nearly £1k and a 1litre engined car quotes ranging from £144 to £400+
I live in a relatively good area, no convictions, no accidents ect. Sometimes it’s not what you drive it’s what they can get away with price wise.
Do the quotes thing, as asking what others have paid or got quoted can lead to a right mixed bag of answers.
