i am nearly 19 and will have 1 year ncb *fingers crossed!
currently have a cheap VW Up! as my daily and am looking to get a mx5. wanted one from day 1 but insurance prices said otherwise!
what other young drivers on here (ideally 18-20 y/o) have their 5’s insured and who are they with and what are you paying?
what can i do to bring insurance down? and i absolutely do not want a blackbox as i have been tied to one already!
is it cheaper to get it modified (have hear people paying less on modified that standard! and if so, to what extent does it need to be modified?!)? what mods can i have which wont really affect the price? also is there anyone on here that can potentially get me discount! ill buy you a drink! is a nb cheaper to insure? i much prefer the na. is would import make much difference? just want to explore all my options tbh, im a like minded young car enthusiast and would really like an mx5. i allready know the joys that come with the nature of owning one (rust, rust and more rust!). its what i when next so all tips, hacks and tricks to bring down insurance is appreciated.
the cheaper the better! any help will be appreciated.
Good luck with your enquiry Ahmed. Hopefully someone in your age range will come along soon and be able to answer your questions - my son is 22 and has a stock NB 1.6 which , I think , costs him 600 p.a. with 3 years ncb.
tbh, i think thats not too bad a price. the main reason i tried to target a specific age group is just simply because its hen more relevant and i then have a ball park figure to work to. also then its more relevant tfor me.
due to young age, i cannot get classic cr insurance as more require min age or 21. also some insure that are quite cheap which have been recommended on here also require min age of 21…
hi Ahmed
you have to seriously shop around, also try the club recommended insurers to see if they are really serious about wanting our business. it’s worth joining the club if they give a good price for young members.
my nephew put his mother on his insurance even though she would never drive it probably & got a good discount, dont know why but it’s worth a shot
good luck
hi thanks for this advice and believe me i have probably spent as my dad would say 900 hours, on comparison site trying most/every possibility possible! they just dont seem to be wanting to insure young drivers or on the other side of the extreme are just simply penalising us…
i have tried some of these places, however they require either min age 21 (im 18) or licence held for 12 months (currently only 6 months).
also i have tried getting quotes with my dad on the policy as named driver and vice versa, it tends to go up, due to his occupation ( car dealer)! also i cannot join his policy on his trader policy as min age again is usually 19 with min 12mths licence held and even then the prices come pack ridiculously high.
i know its possible for young driviers vecause i have seen them on the roads in 5’s.
but i am not willing to pay stupid money, quotes coming back at around £4k +…
is there any genuine way on here to actually get reasonable insurance. ofcourse joining the club, even this i got a quote saying i am a full club member and it did not make any difference on quote (on other cars as well, not just the 5’s).
i really would like one soon, summer is round the corner!
feel for you Ahmed. it’s a crying shame but there are always youngsters (not you) who are stupid drivers abusing the system & ramping up the insurance costs nationally through bad driving & accidents.
I understand there is a gadget to put on the car which monitors your driving style to help keep insurance cost down. talk to your current insurance provider to see ifyou can prove driving style is good with the gadget for 6 months then they might reduce rates?
current premuim have lead to me to have already had a black box installed on my car. current car is a VW Up as a daily driver!.
i know what you are saying about other drivers. not being big headed/boasting or anything, but i am rather a competent driver and can handle power. i have grew up around many older jap performance cars, '89 mk3 supra (non-turbo), Primera P10 eGT (SR20DE red top), Celica Supra (Celica XX), Primera P11 GT (SR20DE black top my first car/ (non daily)), civic ek9, honda accord VTEC, just to name a few…! i do have experience with the odd track driving and to say an MX5 will be too much for me, i dont think so!
my driving is actually rather good, this can be proved by my current insurance policy, i will prove with pics of driving results later.
i would not want an mx5 with a black box because i would not then be allowed to use on trackdays also then companies penalise for driving over 1 hour long per journey, or more than 7 journeys (start the car max 7 times) ( so even if i move my car onto the drive for a wash then back of thats two journeys there and then it will five bad usage points as it was a wasteful journey (i could have walked that distance is how they look at it) a day (in my case), get low driving score if i drive between 11pm and 5am.
i would not want this kind of policy for an mx5. i am looking for a car to enjoy, not one which i will not be able to drive and ends up as a driveway souvenir…
i would be gratefull if anyone on here can link me up with someone who can get me a serious deal!
hey ahmed, i was not implying you were a bad driver; on the contrary, it is because of a long history of bad young drivers over the years that you are being forced to pay premium price now.
I liked that old Celica, nearly bought one years ago but went for a 205gti instead. bad choice of mine as it happens.
Give up trying the comparison websites, they’re a waste of time for someone in your position.
Try calling all the specialist insurers you can find and actually speaking to a broker who knows their job. If they can’t find you a good price, you’ll never get one.
i have tried calling companies before, but i end up onhold for half an hour before i get through to someone and then to find they will not insure me because of my age!
do you know any companices i could try? footman james say 21… and few others? any reccomended companics would be much appreciated!
There must be at least half a dozen specialists that advertise in STHT. Try searching for specialist insures for sports and modified cars and young drivers with google.
Peter Best, Green Light, RH, Lifesure, Keith Michaels, Performance Direct, 4 young drivers, there are hundreds of insures who don’t pay to be included on comparison sites. You’re clearly wasting your time with comparison sites because they cater mainly for the masses, the common stuff. You need something special, so you need a specialist. If a specialist who knows the industry can’t find you a good deal, then it probably doesn’t exist. But you will need to spend hours on a phone. Specialist will take the time to speak to the underwriters directly, so it may take several calls over several days to get a quote. But don’t hold out too much hope, your age and lack of experience will mean no one wants to insure you but someone will at the right price. That’s a price that’s right for them, not you.
Not sure if you have already picked up on this one, but having one of your parents listed as a named driver will bring the insurance premiums down. Not sure why but that definitely seems to be the case.
I would also recommend that you do a google search (other search engines are available) for young driver insurance. I have just finished re-insuring one of our cars so our 17-year-old can drive it as a learner driver and I found quite a few sites that do insurance comparisons specifically for younger drivers.
Having promised my son that he will be insured to drive our Mk3 once he passes his test I am already steeling myself for how much that will cost - and that’s just with him as a named driver, not as the policy holder. So I have a lot of sympathy for your position.
yes this does wok as then it seems that more than one person requires the use of the carand then ultimately the youger one is them more likely to look after the car and drive safely so it can be used by the next person - well thats how they look at it why it brings premiums down.
also because my dad is a motor trader, car insurers dont seem to like this occupation and in my case the premiums go up!
also the MK3 NC mx5 is a much lower insurance group so its just generally far cheaper to insure. personaally im not too font of the NC or newer! no rust to prove its a real mx5!
the hunt is still on to find cheap insurace, will be looking to get one in july as getting quotes once4 i get a 1years ncb prices tend to drop much more!
I am 20 and have a NB/mk2.5, and I just paid £794 for my insurance half an hour ago. Bought it through direct line. All my quotes coming through Compare the Market were £1300+ and so was my renewal quote (I have had it 1 year).
What brought it down for me was the fact that I don’t intend to ever make a claim on my car itself. Making a claim at this age will shoot the insurance sky high for next couple years; the excess is very high anyway as a young driver, and the value of the car is not very much.
Therefore, I set the value of the car quite low, and chose 3rd party not comprehensive, because the difference between the excess and the value of the car is only a few hundred quid. Not really worth buying comprehensive cover on cheap cars like these.
My first year was £1700 for a 10 month policy with a black box… not nice! BUt i stuck with it and for £800 I am very pleased, I only have 1 year NCB as well. I don’t think insurance for other cars is much less to be honest. I previously had a fiat panda that was £800/year to insure, so after just waiting 1 year, the MX-5 has gone to the same cost as that.
