Just picked up an mx5, which in my garage SORN at the moment. As my neighbours garage just blew up taking their car with it im thinking it might be an idea to insure the car even tho its sorn, but because im 24 the insurance companies want £600, with an excess of £950! as i only paid £500 for the car this seems absurd. Does anybody know of a company that might give me reasonably priced insurance while my mx5 is off the road?
I guess if the car’s SORN, it is not actually on the road so there isn’t a main user as such so you could possibly insure it in somebody elses name. This would only work if it is going to be SORN for a long time.
One Insurance company had a short term / interim ‘off-the-road’ cover for free I used when I was repairing my own MX-5. I’ll try to find which one it was for you.
I find Swift Cover the best for me and if you are a bonafide MX-5 member you can get discount from Footman James …but don’t settle with an on-line quote which can be expensive, you need to negotiate on the phone. There may be minimum age restrictions on these policies.
As a matter of interest , a short while ago it was announced that the law is changing , making it compulsory to insure a vehicle even if it is on Sorn .
I don’t think that’s right. The change is to ensure that all vehicles are either insured or on a SORN so they can more easily track insurance dodgers. What you can’t do now is take your vehicle off the road for a few months and cancel the insurance without also getting a SORN.
I think thats also incorrect, as I had my old, dead Golf GTi Cab on a SORN for over best part of last 2 years with NO insurance whilst I decided what do to with it, and had SORN notifications from DVLA no probs - last one being end in Jan this year.
The law might well have changed but not come into effect as of yet.
Looks like it isn’t here yet - some are saying March but I haven’t found a definitive date yet.
Other forums are saying that the law is in place - effective January, but enforcement won’t start until April.
But as one chap so rightly says, why are they dicking about like this? It won’t stop uninsured drivers as they are usually scum that have stolen a motor or are banned anyway etc and don’t give a damn about anyone. The SORN / insurance law was already in place and all this does is tie up SORN with insurance now as well tax discs.
Hi. £600 sounds way to high for laid up on sorn fire and theft only and kept in garage. Shop around and try classic car insurnace - Then again perhaps you neighbours misshap has got out…
Thanks guys, I will try contacting the classic insurers see what they say, just hope they dont know my neigbour!!
Im pretty sure that the new law (effective as of jan 2011) only means if the vehicle is taxed you need to insure it regardless of wether you drive it or not, if it is sorn it doesnt ‘need’ to be insured.
Whilst I don’t know what I am talking about, I hope this is not a daft question? Can’t you itemise anything on your house insurance? A ring, PC, bike etc. Is there anything to stop you insuring an “Off the road” car in a garage at an agreed value?
According to my wife ( an insurance bod ) the answer to the car covered under the house insurance - Nope! Even if the garage that it’s parked in is an intrinsic part of the house, motor vehicles could not be covered as a specified item.
I had my Porsche covered even though on a SORN, garaged whilst at home, agreed value and limited milage - £108 pa. but I too am an old git. That was with Lancaster.
