I have just had an insurance quote from Saga of £102 for an mx5 with 4 years no claims which I was about to accept . On stating that mine is an import Saga refused to quote, they do not do imports. My other quotes are many times higher unless I opt for classic insurance (£138 for 3000 miles). Is there anyone in the club who has the status and inclination to negotiate with Saga to persuade them to do a special arrangement for the MX5 O C members imported cars. It does seem obvious that imported cars are identical to UK models ( near as…) and that Saga would be assured a huge increase in business if they can insure club members imported cars for the same price as imports. Hoping this gets a positive response, and please do respond if you feel it is a worthwhile negotiation to undertake.

I would not rely on that in the event of a claim. Plenty of different import cars have the same model name and spec abroad as they do in the UK and are still considered as imports for the purposes of insurance.
My reg doc states it’s an MX-5 but mines a Roadster.
I spoke to Saga re insurance only this week and asked for a quote. Before I started with the question and answering process (to save wasting my time) I declared I have an import, they said no, sorry we don’t insure imports. I said it’s just the the same as a UK spec car, but called a Roadster. The answer I got was, still no can do, sorry.
I would be very wary if you have to make a claim, infact they could even void your policy if you knew it was an import when you first took the policy out.
I’m pretty sure they’ll null and void your insurance in the event of a claim. At the end of the day, it is the owners responsibility to provide the right information - not the DVLA. If you know that you have an import but insure it as a UK car solely because the log book says MX5 and not Eunos or Roadster then I think that is very thin ice indeed…
Hi, Called Saga today for a quote and they said the same, they don’t insure ‘grey imports’. Said that all MX5’s were ‘imports’ as they are all made in the same Japanese factory, but no, it was a grey import and so no can go. Told them that that was silly as they insure us ‘greys’ (retired folks), at least that got a laugh, so I would add my voice to the original request for someone in the club to talk - plead - our case.
