Intake manifold cleaning - Is this the EGR path?

Cleaning out the Intake manifold on my Mk2 as it was looking at a bit grubby and being on 150k miles it’s probably worth a look.

There is a lot of surface grime and carbon build up on most of it, but nothing too bad. However there is a this little port that is absolutely chocker full with carbon and appears to be completely blocked. I’m starting to clean it out starting with the top half of the manifold.

Is this the EGR path? I’ve read that the EGR can get pretty blocked if not checked, so I assume it this.

I sprayed some parts cleaner in there, but it just sits in there and doesn’t go anywhere, so It seems fair to assume it’s blocked.

Thanks.

I’m interested in learning more about this as my car is on a similar mileage.
Might be something I tackle if it seems to make a difference.
Cheers,
Guy

Hmm, wrong side for EGR.

With all that clag it looks more like crankcase ventilation on a well-worn engine. (Owned a few in the past, alas.)

I’d be interested to find out what it actually is.

Just in case you haven’t found the answer yet, yes this hole is part of the EGR path.
If you search for MX5 ( or Miata ) error code P0402 there are quite a few articles about this blocked hole and how to clean it.

Thanks, I managed to clean it up and unblock the other end. I also removed the lower manifold and cleaned that up including all the EGR pathways there.

It’s running a lot better and seems to idle far smoother.
