- My model of MX-5 is: 2017 ND
- I’m based near: Bristol
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Gear selection issues
I have an issue that has started to get worse. On occasion I cannot select a gear. So last week I drove to a car park (a good few miles so car warmed up) with no issues but when I got there I couldn’t select reverse. Then I couldn’t get any gear. This has happened at traffic lights on the odd occasion. I tried the usual release clutch and try again but nope. Not having it. I bought the car 12 months ago and its on 30k. I have no idea whether its had transmission fluid change. Could it be as simple as that?
It should have had new transmission oil at 5 years which you can check on the service record.
There is nothing in the service record that hints at a transmission oil change.
I would assume it hasn’t been done so needs doing asap.
This link shows what should have been carried out over the years for you to check against your records

It may be that the clutch fluid needs changing. If you pump the clutch pedal 5 or 6 times in quick succession does it improve things as this would be an indication that air is in the system.
If you get stuck turn the engine off, select a gear and start the car ‘in gear’.

I’ll try the clutch pump thing. Hadn’t thought about clutch fluid TBH. Thanks for the suggestion. Is there a way of checking the fluid level for someone who can just about manage to open the bonnet!!?
It uses the same reservoir as the brakes so have a look and see that the level is up to the ‘full’ line.
When the brakes are bled it is good practice to do the clutch at the same time but 99% of garages will overlook this as it is not on the official service schedule.
