Hi all,
I don’t have a garage and I’m afraid the MX5 is taking a hammering from the weather. I’ve purchase a factory fit cover and thinking about locking her up for the winter.
Any tips appreciated.
thanks,
Matt

A really decent layer of polish. I had my garage rebuilt do the car was under cover for about 4 months (they were slow)…when it’s windy you do see iot flapping around a bit, but i noticed no damage to paint work.
over inflate tyres by 5 ilbs, don’t put on handbrake, leave in gear. move forwards/backwards every month or so every few of weeks to avoid flat spotting tyres. if you can leave it attached to a battery charger like the “CTEK” one do so
Hi where did you get the cover from ,looking for a good weather resistant one to fit my (baby) 2011 NC3 poor girl has to sit on the drive no garage
eBay £70
Thanks watchnut
Just washed and covered mine, as much to keep pine needles and leaves out of the vents etc. as keeping it clean!
Recommend a couple of those anti damp pockets (type you can recharge in the microwave), I bought 2 and leave them in the Mk1 when it is SORN. Link below £15 Amazon
Similar to me, garage is been cleared out for the winter and in the mean time I bought a factory cover from Mazda dealer, £67. One thing is if you’re leaving outside with cover on then place cotton sheets over the bonnet and boot. If it’s windy the cover moves and can lightly scratch the paintwork. Apart from that agree with other comments. Finally if it’s the factory cover you have bought it is surprisingly waterproof and breathable.
My MX5 was a bit of an impulse buy, midlife crisis and all that. I did some homework before I bought one, mostly reading reviews. Bullet proof engines, handle well, massive grin factor etc. etc. Bought my NC last November and love it. However, once I picked it up I joined the forums and it was all about tucking them up over winter I thought what have I done? And that was before I’d read the threads about the rust issues
This was going to be my daily driver! Surely there must be some of us mad enough to drive these all year round!?
My ND is a daily driver, my Eunos gets SORN December 1 to early the next year once all salt has been washed off the roads. My ND has had a ceramic paint protection and is also undersealed and cavity waxed.
It (the ND) is (probably) my last ever new car and a “keeper” so spent a bit of money to help it survive. My Eunos is completely rust free and, to the best of my knowledge, hasn’t been exposed to salted roads but has also been cavity waxed.
It’s too easy to leave it in the garage in winter, or even raining in summer when you have a second car to use. I’ve used my NC over winter, not every week in the winter months but when dry.
Three years ago I kept it taxed in December through to March and it never touched the road in Dec, hardly in Jan or Feb either, a waste really. So I now SORN for three maybe four months and up to £100 not wasted in tax for it to sit in the garage.
Yep I know there are good dry sunny days to be had in winter but the wet dank days are far greater.
Thanks @Garwood55.
I have the same cover. Planning to wash, wax and cover this weekend (weather permitting).
Matt
Did the same last weekend. However reading some of the other comments, I keep my 5 taxed and insured all year round. There is nothing better than a dry, crisp and sunny winters day for a roof down blast. Gillet, beanie and heated seats
I must look up the enabling heated seats thread.
I started to look at doing this but warm weather arrived so it went on the back burner
I recently invested in a heated gillet, it’s brilliant. Either runs on rechargeable batteries or plugs into the CIG lighter socket.
Amazon has a good selection at very reasonable (Christmas Present?) prices… Hint hint.
Cheaper and easier than retro-fitting seat heater panels and useable on winter walks (if you have to!)
About £25 on amazon plus the batteries @ £14 each. I have found a battery last around 4 hrs on med setting.
