Is my fuse box connector dirty?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK3.5
  2. I’m based near: Hertfordshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Engine compartment fuse box

Hi all,

I have never poked around in an engine compartment fusebox before. The main connector in mine is incredibly dirty around where the wires enter the connector, and on the underside where the pins from the fusebox enter the connector.

It feels very grimey, oily and sticky, with almost burn-like marks around the edges of the plastic connector. Is this normal at all? As I said, never been up close and personal with the fusebox here, so not sure if it’s some protective coating that’s supposed to be there, or if it’s an issue. I have been having emissions issues, so I am inspecting all wiring/connectors in the engine bay as part of my diagnosis.

Please see attached some pictures of the connector.

Many thanks,
Yellowbean

That stuff looks scary, but it’s normal. It helps to keep the wet from blowing into the contacts.
