I’m wanting to upgrade my door speakers and those behind the headrest (mk2.5). So that I can do a good & neat job without destroying plastic retainers or clips, is there a ‘how to’ on gaining access to and removing the speakers please?
I replaced the door speakers in my 2.5 with the upgrade from Mx5 parts. Ive not done anything like it before so I took my time and it all went smoothly. Just 2 things to keep in mind, the original spekers are glued in and do require easing out and you do have to enlarge the opening in the plastic back box. It says use a clip tool to get the door panel off but a large flat blade screwdiver does the job just as well once the 2 screws have been removed.
I didn’t replace the speakers in the wind blocker as I found that they were good enough with the more powerful door speakers.
Remember if in doubt just ask
cheers
Ian
Thanks for that. The MX5 parts speakers look like these ones. Possibly also another generic 6x9 fit would also work??
I also want to replace the tweeters in the top of the doors, I assume these are mounted to the back of the door card?
The windblocker speakers will also need a good dose of looking at, I’ll see what I can find out.
I’ve also ordered a proper tool for removing the plastic clips - I’ve lost count of the number of scratches in paintwork and plastic I’ve incurred over the years …
G’day mate
I see from your sig that photography is your game, so how about producing an FAQ for the forum?
That could be a very good idea…
Before you start, the best advice I can give you, is to make sure that you have new crimps for the speaker cables. The standard ones didn not fit the new ones I used. Also with the new speakers I fitted, which were about £40 from halfrauds, I didn’t have to cut down the plastic “rain protector” they just bolted straight in.
it’s a fairly simple job. Longest part will be trying to seperate the old speakers from the glued on plastic.
Mk 2.5 door card removal…
Left the centre out first, which will come out 1/4 of inch ,then pull the rest out.
Same the the outside door edge lugs.
Next unscrew the screw that holds the door cup.
Now the two screws that hold the door card handle to the inner door skin, phillip head screws.
Mk 2 door handle as two screws ,one the same as the 2.5 at the top and one in the handle underneath the small carpet trim, other wise everything is the same on both models.
Mk 2 below…
Now pull out from the bottom to pop the door card lugs
Next get hold of the handle and pull out and lift up.
Your door card is free of the door skin, all you need to do now is unplug the tweeter, a small screw driver helps to press in the locking tap on the plug.
You can now get to your speaker for changing.
Thanks to agent orange, for letting me use his Mk 2.5 and earl for using his Mk 2
Hope this help.
Will that do ya Geoff

Brilliant!
Just what I needed to see before attempting to figure out what’s wrong with my left door speaker.
It stopped working after the sills were repaired in February.
Great guide,
My nearside speaker went pop and it’s been anoying me for about a year.
Purchased a reclaimed mk2.5 speaker from MX5 Heaven and fitted in under 10mins.
My local MX5 dealer wanted about £140 for a new speaker and fitting!
Alex.
Sounds like they have been unpluged or a wire burnt?
