Only had the beauty a few weeks but have noticed that whenever I am out and about (never dawdling) that other drivers seem to have an uncontrollable urge to overtake, usually at places where such a move is ill advised and has been everything from young lads in corsas to old guys in Toyotas, I usually just let them get on with it, had two in the last few days I had no choice about, the first was yesterday, quiet, fairly narrow Norfolk winding country lane where 50 was going some, a Ferrari (L reg) came up to the rear bumper then roared past almost taking my front off as he moved back over. Rough estimate about 80 and he had a small child in the front who could just be seen over the dashboard. The second was this morning, residential street in Cromer doing about 30 with 50 yds to go to a junction, Nissan Skyline shot past like I was in reverse, exhaust on him like a bucket, caught up with him at the junction and followed thru town before he raced off out towards Holt, could still hear him thrashing it when he was well out of sight. So, do other MX5s attract the same attention or is it just me?
Ignore them, they are all nutters that drive like that, even worse when they have a child or anyone else with them.
havnt had that prob myself i have to say, but if i did suffer as previously said just let them get on with it.
I posted a thread about this sort of behavior a few weeks ago on Pistonheads HERE…
Seems to me to always be men and always in diesels.
Interesting link there mate, seems that there are many other drivers out there who feel the need to pass an MX5, I don’t feel the need to race around, I enjoy the drive, I’ll continue to let the others do their thing too.
I find the same thing happens to me, seems to be worse with the 1999 sport, I think it must be the roll bar that I fitted, they drive up only a few feet from the rear bumper.
I think if they try and push you, and that you will take them on. Funnily enough police cars also try the same thing.
Mozza
Can’t say I’ve experienced this - Jan however has commented when she’s driving, partic. since she got her Mk3, problem is she relishes the challenge…[6][6]
Just shrug your shoulders and take it as a compliment
They obviously feel inferior in some way - hence the need to overtake
Remember you’re the one with the brain, driving the better car [H]
Thanks for your input folks, I think we are all singing from the same hymn sheet.
As stated above, I think a feeling of inferiority is the underlying cause here. Sounds like a few frustrated (possibly sexually!) men with big cars, small d*cks and a point to prove [;)].
I get this all the time unfortunately. I’m unsure if it’s because i’m in a red two seater sports car with no windblocker and the roof always down which to me has that James Dean thing all over it, or the fact that other drivers in inferior pieces of metal get the hump because i’m enjoying driving in the open air and they are not[:D]
Went out today in my car and yes sure as anything some complete idiot roared past me nearly ripping my offside rear bumper off in the process. w*nker indeed. And yes i agree it’s usually either chav’s in modded Saxo’s/Corsa’s/Golf’s or old guys in BMW/Mercedes diesels. I even managed to get up the collar of a guy driving a Mustang, how i don’t quite know as i was only turning left. I wonder why? oh yes i had the roof down enjoying the warm spring air and he was stuck under a metal roof all stuffed up in a tin can. I wonder who’s was the more comfortable drive?[:)]
It does annoy me, but if someone wants to overtake or goad me in to going faster, i just let them get on with it, it’s their perogative to drive like a loon and write their car off!!!

Let 'em past. Then tailgate in the corners…
Funnily enough although i have only had my 5’ for a week i can honestly say - YES ABSOLUTELY.
It really is bizarre, in the past week ive had vectras up my rear, 4x4 just itching to overtake me on B roads and last night on the A66 (between stockton and teeside retail park) a taxi even attempted to overtake me at 80mph!
On the other side of the discussion, I have had many a car indicate or wave me past on a narrow country road.
People
do like to overtake though, I just let 'em. I’m never in that much of a
hurry and I don’t need to prove my manhood by driving dangerously - I
have three kids to provide for, can’t do that from a hospital bed.
I like the twisties and I like driving fast, but I’m not keen on
overtaking on country roads unless I can see loads of road ahead.
I take it was the taxi and not you doing 80 on that section of the A66 - the limit is 50 there…[:O][:O]
Hmmmm Yeah…[A][:#]
Seriously though, it was actually just before that 50 limit kicks in, the taxi flew passed and left me for dust.
Always amazes me how ‘professional’ drivers play fast and loose with their licence, whenerver I see a taxi/bus/lorry/van being driven in excess of the limit I always think
'press on matey, 12 points = no job…"
When I’m in my MX-5 I always have the urge to pass other MX-5s!!! [:P]
I used to drive a Lada Riva, it was the car EVERYONE had to try and overtake.
So think yourself lucky you have an MX5!
