Is there a test for the Cam Angle Sensor to rule out if it is my issue without removing/changing it?

 Hello all,

After finding myself having to load my MX on the RAC van late Friday night after spending hours trying to not die from being so cold, I have looked into why my car stopped working in  the first place.

All signs point to either fuel pump, fuel filter or CAS…

I’m pretty sure now I can hear the pump working as normal and from reading other bits online I think it is the CAS that has failed, the car wants to start, I can smell petrol as if it is flooding but it just won’t fire and there is plenty of fuel in the tank.

Now, I can remove the CAS from my Dads MK2 to test on my engine, but I wanted to find out first if there is any test I can do in situe to find out if that part is waht is causign me to have to drive a Ford KA now…

If I do need to change it, would it be the whole unit and the o’ring or just part of it?

Thanks, Drew.

The 1.6 Cam Angle Sensor is also known as the Crank Angle Sensor in the common vernicular. On the 1.8s, the CAS was moved to the exhaust camshaft, but was doing the same job. Mazda now started calling this the camshaft position sensor. In 1996, OBDII cars in the US also gained an actual Crankshaft Position Sensor; also a CPS…

Have a look at:

You want to check for a Ne signal.

I doubt that the Mk1 and Mk2 CAS are the same.  They are certainly mounted in different places.

You can bench test a MK1 crank angle sensor. 12 volt feed one of the terminals, ground another one and check for a 5volt switched output on the other 2 while turning the sensor. You’ll need to work out which terminals to feed and ground from which terminals are live and ground on the cars harness or check on a wiring diagram. If you post your VIN I can give you the wire colours. If you can smell fuel it’s probably injecting which would rule out the crank sensor though.

I can certainly smell petrol when I’m turning it over…

I’ll get the VIN and post it up, thank you.  I will just for good measure change the fuel filter I think as I’m not 100% sure of when it was last done, will also double check the fuel pump is working as it should I think.

Thanks for all the help.
