Is this exhaust pipe cover standard for a Merlot?

Hi guys,

As can be seen from the photos below, the shiny (or at least what used to be shiny) cover on the exhaust pipe has been rusting badly ever since I bought it.

I’m not too bothered about it, except I would like to know whether it’s standard fitment on the Merlot: if not, I’ll whip it off to avoid arguments with the ever-finicky insurance company.

I’d be grateful if anyone can shed any light on the matter.

Thanks,

Spinner

yes, I think it is but not 100% sure.  This photo http://merlotmotorsport.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

from the old exhaust of our Merlot track car says it is, and I seem to recall it had a very rusty crome end before we changed it. assuming that was still standard.  Although a car of that age that still has any original exhaust is unlikely surely?

Are your insurance company really that fussy !?

Hi Spinner,

In answer to your question - No it’s not. The standard fit exhaust on a Merlot and most, if not all, other UK Mk1’s of the same time did not have a cover as your photo suggests. The Merlot was no different to a standrd Mk1 in respect of it’s mechanicals. The end of the standard fit exhuast has a shiney end welded on - it does not cover anything - it is just the end of the exhaust if you get what I mean. If you want a picture of mine to clarify, which I assure you is most definately ‘standard’, then give me a shout [:D]. Hope this helps.
