Issue with drivers' side window not going fully up

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK2.5 2002
  2. I’m based near: Milton Keynes
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Electric window

Hi all, this is my first time posting here as I am new to the forum. Hopefully this is in the right place!

About a month ago I noticed that my driver’s side window wouldn’t go up all the way unless I either had the roof down or my door open. It has been progressively getting worse, and I can feel a distinct lack of power in the right window compared to the passenger’s side. It has since caused a weird whining noise to come from the engine bay, particularly when I use the electronics, which goes away after a couple of minutes!

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated

Welcome BSJ :handshake:

Yes …you are in the right place

Was just about to log off when I saw your post

From my experience it sounds like your drivers side window Regulator needs replacing as it may have become corroded [happens with our NBs this age] as it did with mine a wee while back and ditto my passenger side one is still good to go

Have to dash but other members will reply

Thank you for the response! Sorry for responding so late.

Do you know of any good places to get them from? I presume I’d want to buy one brand new…

Thanks!

Hiya
Have a look at MX5 parts, the link is near the top of the page.

Hi BSJ

First you need to confirm it is the window Regulator

When mine seized [Fastest GP appt ever as more worried about a seized window half way up in the car park than my own health ]
Straight round to my non-specialist mechanics who removed the door card (?) for Free and locked the window in the up position for Free until I could afford a New Regulator

If it is the Regulator as Coconino recommended you can purchase one via MX5 Parts [Discount as Club Member]
That is what I did
BUT
The Part comes ‘Not Made Up’

So cheerfully took the part to my non-specialist mechanics and they said ‘No Thanks…Not Made Up…More Labour Intensive’

So…Options…[if it is the window Regulator]

DIY…Get the Part [always get a new one] and someone on the Forum who has done the task may be willing to guide you through it [there may even be a tutorial on how to do it some where ?]

Alternatively what I had to do was return the Non Made Up Part to MX5 Parts and rely on my non specialist mechanics to replace it via their contacts

This was £309.50 [VAT incl] in January 2023

Hope this helps your Decision Making ?

But you need a mechanic to do ‘hands on’ the issue for starters
