Issue with Hardtop Frankenstein Bolt turning freely

Hi,

I’m attempting to replace the Hardtop Frankenstein Bolt, however my existing ones just turn freely. Does this mean that the chrome plate that these Hardtop Frankenstein Bolt screw into is damaged or do they screw into a nut somewhere?

Please advise.

Thanks

Greenhornet.

They’re on a threaded stud, that goes through the plate and into a captive nut. Probably stripped.

HI Saz9961
How do I access and remove this captive nut?

and thank you for your reply.

You can’t

so what are my options?

The bollt has two parts. The head and a threaded stud.

Its either spinning on the captive nut on the car, or on the stud.

This is what is underneath

You might be able to reach up blind in the boot and figure out what is going on

Thank you.
I think this may be a failed designed on the mazda. Not having a removable nut, instead the nut is welded to the body?
I’ll give this a shot over the weekend.

No, its a failed effort by someone who tried to previous remove the bolts. Why are you fitting new ones?

Another possibility that I have seen oin other MX5s is that rear end damage and repair has resultedin bodgery. I have seen a Mazda dealer replace the rear wings on a car, and tried to form a tread using filler.

Remember, you are also looking at a very old car now.

Most cars are covered in captive nuts, so not a bad design.

my existing bolts are turning slightly, the notches are quite worn so thought best to replace them now.
