Issues with paintwork “burning away”

  1. My model of MX-5 is: mk3
  2. I’m based near: Inverness
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Paintwork

Hi there, new to the group, looking for advice or maybe someone who has gone through a similar scenario.

I have a 2008 ‘True Red’ Mx5, one of my first projects was getting it wrapped. I did a-lot of prep work and had a bodyshop look at my car to make sure the paint was in condition for it to be wrapped and all was good for the go ahead.

A week before the scheduled wrap, I left my car with a friend in his garage to put a full set of breaks on. I collected my car on a Saturday morning and drove it straight to the body shop where it stayed parked up until Monday.

I received a phone call by the Monday afternoon asking if I come by and look at my car as there seems to be some sort of chemical burn all over my car. I went straight away and sure enough on my boot, brake light and the middle of my bonnet there are random splotches where my paint has lightened and started to dissipate.

We tried testing the wrap but as soon as it lifted, most of the paint was taken up with it. I’ve spoken too a few different garages/ body shops who have recommended a bare metal respray but can’t give answer to whats caused the issue.

I have attached a photo but unfortunately it isn’t the easiest to pick up on camera.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated:)

Over polished and burnt through the paint work during the prep

What exactly was involved with the prep work and what products were used?

Showing my ignorance here as I’m saving for Bullit to have a respray

What is a ‘WRAP’ ?
How is it different from a Respray ?

Can either be affected by the vehicle being Autoglym polished twice ?

TIA

A big sticker that covers the whole car.

Apparently you can also have a wrap sprayed on. Saw it on Wheeler Dealers

If you are going to wrap it any way is this an issue?
Would it possible to rattle can the affected areas before wrapping the car

When the wrap is taken off then the paint will come with it. Rattle can also will come off most likely. Wraps are expensive although not as expensive as paint. Wrap will need redoing in 5 or so years.

I’ve seen this! Always been curious about it as it’s very low cost relatively. Might try it on my track car

Yeah I get that just don’t see the point in painting a car just to wrap it seem like false economy, what sort of prep is required for the wrap

I don’t have the exact products used as I had taken it to a bodyshop to save time. The main work done was sanding down parts of rust on the wheel arches and then left with a basic prime instead of re-painting it. The same was done with stone chips and areas of lacquer peel.

The areas that where worked on aren’t close to where the paint has no started to come off which confuses me more. When I picked my car up I went around the car looking to make sure it was all okay and no damage, unless a certain product was out on and took a few days to show, but again why would a bodyshop use chemicals damaging to paint…

Definitely does seem like a false economy.

In all honesty I’m quite nee to the paint work side of cars, however most of it seems all a bit of money making.

The guy who was doing my wrap said that unless I get a bare metal respray on the car, which was quoted around £5k, he wouldn’t be able to apply the wrap. I just don’t see the point of respraying my whole car to then stick giant sticker on it🤣
