Jag XJ lock woes

Firstly, I have tried the Jag forums. The knowledge base is either limited, or not very forthcoming over there. Or maybe MX5 owners are amazingly helpful.

The issue; 2004 Jaguar XJ (the aluminium bodied one). Rear door is stuck in the double locked (deadlocked) position. It was a bit intermittent in working before it finally conked out. No clicks from the solenoid inside the door. I’ve been told that the lock actuator is basically the same as for a Mondeo. All of these electric actuators are a bit of a mystery to me, but most of the designs seem the same; a motor driving a plastic cogged gearbox.

I have all the parts needed to hand, and I have a plan to get the door cards off a closed door. But I have no idea on these actuators how to release them manually. An owner with a S-Type basically butchered his door frame to get the lock released and out.

Is there a knack to releasing these types of lock?

This type of lock:

When I owned my XF, the forum was quite active but few Jag owners do their own proper maintenance other than service and bling.

Try the Disco3 forum as most the the JLR parts came from the Ford bin back in the day (the XF had a Volvo badged boot lock if you took the cover off) and those guys have basically stripped and rebuilt all models of Disco.

Earlier this year I had a similar problem with both rear door locks on my BMW. They could be unlocked from inside the car by pulling the door release handle once, releasing it, then pulling it again. I had already replaced the driver’s side door lock myself. It was possible to release the doors from outside by using the remote fob to lower the windows and reaching inside. An MOT fail point though.

It’s now someone else’s problem. Along with other electrical and electronic failures I’d already fixed, this was the final straw and I traded it in.

FOR A FIAT!

Is the child lock engaged ? That part of the lock does not show the motor stuck to the side of it so by turning or pushing whatever the motor does it should release it. The fault would lie in the electrics not the mechanism so if you got a whole replacement unit you could see what exactly is the problem and how it works.

The child lock doesn’t prevent the lock from being opened, it only disengages the inner release handle.

It’s a big problem if you can’t open the door because you can’t even remove the door card to get at the inner mechanism.

I’m glad my “poverty spec” NB doesn’t have central locking - unlike my other cars - less to go wrong! On older cars of any make it’s often the electrics that cause problems.

Childlock is not engaged.

Someone else stripped their lock down; you can see where the motor is, within its enclosure.

I could try a hard reset (disconnect battery). I’m not sure if these have a fail safe condition, where in the event of a crash, the locks all release.

That I’ve noticed, plus some employ this fake JRM way of writing, that grates.

Will do. A tripping CD changer was sorted after I found a fix by a Russian hitting nine bells out of the cd changer on his Range Rover with a ■■■■ of a pistol.

I was under the impression you couldn’t even open the door!

Look on eBay - locks are readily available.

Not my photographs. Door is firmly locked. I have the parts. New actuators are £200 from Jaguar, used parts vary in price hugely.

I have an approach to remove the outer door card without opening the door, and without needing the strip out the back seat. Replacement doorcards in black leather are actually hard to find, in good condition, as many of these cars had ivory leather interiors. Doorcards can go for big money as well; £100 or so, each.

After that, I have to remove an inner door card. There is a debate whether I can get to all the torx screws to remove this. But these are easy to find, and less vital if it gets a bit messed up.

Once removed, I want to check the power supply. As part of the same job, I want to investigate and repair the window regulator, as that’s a bit unreliable. Its possible there is a shared umbilical, and maybe the whole issue was cause by come corrosion on the plug.

But the self-closed nature of the actuator suggests there is nothing external I can do to actuate the lock, unlike older designs. Question posed do I spend time pulling the door card off, only to be defeated because I don’t know enough about these locks, or leave to a specialist, and enjoy my long weekend. The specialist will probably moan about having to use used parts, but new lock from Jaguar is £200, and, if needed, new regulator assembly is £400…

If the door was open, I wouldn’t be here asking for any tips. An XJR owner mentioned a dealer wanted 8 hours labour to force access to the door…

I remember shortly after getting my 2006 XJR that the rear door failed to open, and I had to mess about with it, I can’t remember if I got it open, then worked on it, or if I had to remove the door card with the door closed, but I seem to remember the door panel being off fairly easy to remove, I think there are only 3 screws holding it on, 2 in the handle, one on the pull handle.

There are four locking clips that hold the seat base in place, there are little plastic levers which you need to push to release the clip. They are pushed towards the left side of the car.

I am a member of www.jaguarforums.com and these guys seem to know whats what, had lots of help from them since I got mine. found tis write up on rear seat removal.

""There are four locking clips that hold the seat base in place, there are little plastic levers which you need to push to release the clip. They are pushed towards the left side of the car.

To release the seat back, there are two fabric straps, one on either side, pull them down and pull the top of the seat back forwards.

Be very careful when you put the seat back in again, there are pin swivel hinges that the seat back rotates on, they must be properly in when you lock the seat back in place. “”

As for the double locking, here’s a thread about it. good Luck…
