At the final round of the 2009 Richard Egger Insurance HSA Speed championship at Curborough on October 11th, John Gallagher from Blackpool, not only won the MX5 class on the day (with MX5OC member Tony Thomas coming second and both drivers receiving awards) he also wrapped up the class in the Championship.
However, the biggest news was that John also won the HSA Speed Championship outright, from over 100 other competitors in all classes, by virtue of an amazing season with many wins and class records. To win a prestigious national championship in a roadgoing MX5, which he purchased for less than £2,000 indicates how much fun and success can be achieved with this fantastic car. Following MX5OC member, Barbara Fogden’s excellent eighth place overall in the 2008 Championship the class was even better supported this year.
With some of the quicker MX5 drivers contemplating moving on to bigger and faster things next year the way is left open for new cars and drivers to come in and emulate their success.
