Judder pulling away

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NB mk2__Nevada
  2. I’m based near: Cheshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: judder when pulling away.

initially i thought it was the clutch but on driving more open to suggestions. Has anyone one else found a cure… more revs judder dissapears, low revs doesnt
ive checked
no play in prop or drive shafts.
no wheels loose or bearing movement
No play in rear suspension arm bushes
found some play or movement in diff upper bush (driverside, updown only ).
havent checked engine mounts yet

however, i found a nice bit of grass at the weekend, and once clutch let out, and both wheels spinning the judder still there so clutch isnt the issue.

i am wondering as the car is very low miles, only done 4k in last 10 years/ 28k total, the rubber bushes lost their give or if engine is moving and rear upper diff bush moving too and im feeling vibration as engine/box.diff try to twist???

any suggestions please

Clutch Judder - well known fault on the NBFL

Go back 20 years and this was a huge issue with the NB facelift with much coverage on the Club forum at the time. There were several replacement clutches undertaken to solve it under warranty, but in some cars it never quite went away. More revs was always the best work around. If it’s the same thing after all these years due to your life mileage then it seemed to do it worst when reversing up a slope where there was a fair load on the clutch. I’m not sure it was entirely down to the clutches, it was like a judder through the whole transmission, especially with mine, as I say, at it’s worst trying to reverse up a slope. Mine may still do it but after 20 years you automatically compensate and forget all about it!

Hi thankyou… so if it is a clutch. How come there is the same judder doing donuts on wet grass with clutch out… im wondering more axle tramp or bushes holding the diff/ engine?

How about you just get it up on a 2 poster and start yanking at stuff?
Anything from duff shocker to shot wishbone bushes.

For what it’s worth (I still have the car) my infamous Mk2 5 judder was only fixed under warranty after 3 attempts by the Main Dealer ( thick as mince) with a complete pressure plate, release bearings, and clutch liners. It’s been fine for 56k miles and 16 years since.
I think the Nevada years were inflicted with the equally infamous Made of Swiss Cheese LSDs?
Hope it’s not allied to that but I’d doubt it.
Not all Nevadas had LSDs…I think it was engine size dependent but it’s a long long time past.
