- My model of MX-5 is: __2019 Soul Crystal
- I’m based near: __Birmingham
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __key scratch repairers
When I had my 2016 Soul Red, not the later Soul Red Crystal, I had a bodywork repairer, where I was considering having some chip repairs done tell me that it was the most expensive paint for them to buy based on the 3 stage system.
They also said to get proper matching they would need to go way beyond the local area, was going to be £1200…
I ended up trading the car shortly after, not because of that.
I hope someone can suggest a repairer who can do a professional competent job, if the scratching covers a large area I’d be considering an insurance repair.
Really sorry to read about your woes, Doc.
Has the damage gone through the top clearcoat/lacquer through to the primer/metal underneath?
I ask as if the cost is going to be along the lines of IanH’s post, if the damage is solely to the topcoat it may be that a paint correction specialist could attend to it?
Alternatively, I guess that as, Ian writes, you may need to look at claiming on your insurance - in which case it may be worth asking the company if they have a preferred bodyshop and then check out their reputation?
Depends how deep it is. If you can get your finger nail in it, then really it’s a respray job.
If only a slight scratch a detailer could machine polish or wet sand it out for you.
Ammo NYC has a DIY video about filling deep scratches, but it takes a long time and patience.
Thanks for the advice, it’s definitely a respray unfortunately
My daughter lives in a flat on a main road and has to park her car on the street. It’s a 2004 Mazda3 with 80k miles on it. It’s a great little car, has been really reliable in the three years she’s had it and she’s done several long trips with it no trouble at all. She loves it. It’s the 3rd Mazda in the family along with a 6 and the mx-5. We love Mazdas
Some moron put a deep scratch along the driver’s side from half-way along the rear door to the middle of the front wing. It’s too deep for a scuff repair. It’s metallic grey. Quotes to repair it are more than the car’s worth so no chance of claiming on insurance. She was really upset about it but has learned to live with it. I’ve told her to treat it as a battle scar.
Could she get a set of cheap-but-tasteful side graphics to put on the car?
You can get them for around £20 a pair, and they can transform the look of the car. Obviously depends on exactly where on the car the scratch is…
Sorry to hear about that, yes battle scar is the way to look at it
Consider getting PPF fitted afterwards will provide protection.
