Keyless Entry Unlocking Of Door

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND2
  2. I’m based near: South Lakes
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Keyless Entry Operation

How is the keyless entry system supposed to work? I find that when I press the “Request Switch” on the door handle I get one beep then I pull the handle to open the door and it is still locked. I press the “Request Switch” a second time and get a double beep and the door opens! Why does it not open the first time? Is it something to do with a settings? I have looked at the manual and find the numerous options confusing.

Many thanks.

Are you sure the doors were actually locked before pressing the request switch for the 1st time?

The manual says that to lock the car, press the request switch once. The indicators will flash once and there will be one beep. To unlock, after pressing the request switch there will be two indicator flashes and two beeps. As RR suggests, have you been leaving it parked in an unlocked state?

Thanks for your responses guys. I am using the “walk away” feature which automatically locks the car when the key fob is out of range. I have checked this and you do get two beeps when it locks. When I walk back to the car it is locked. Sometimes when I press the request button I get two beeps and the door unlocks. At other times I get one beep and the door remains locked. This can repeat sometimes until I press the request button, get two beeps and the door unlocks. I find it frustrating as there does not seem to be any logic to it all. I will investigate further to see if there is anything that I am doing that causes the apparent random operation.

Many thanks.

I have a 2013 Mazda6 which has the same ‘walk away’ feature. Very occasionally I’ve had your problem (one beep and door stays locked). I think it’s associated, in my case anyway, with the amount of use the car gets, and the consequent state of the battery’s charge. Exacerbated by lockdown! If I take the car for a good run it sorts itself out. The i-stop function has gone AWOL since lockdown too.

Ps: I don’t think I’ve ever used the buttons on the keyfob. It’s one of the things I like about the six; the keys stay in my pocket.

I would be tempted to replace the battery, they do not last very long and become a bit temperamental when nearing the end of their life.

Agreed. I’ve just had the 6 serviced and the dealer said the battery was on its way out.

Good thought, but the car is only three years old and the i-Stop is operating normally so the battery must be ok. I have had the problem from new but it is sporadic. I will try to see if it is anything in the way I lock or try to unlock the car that causes it.

We are talking about the battery in the key fob. At 3 years without replacement it is definitely the most likely way to solve your problem.

Actually, I’m talking about the main battery, but you definitely have a good point. Those keyfob batteries have a finite life because, by the way they work, they are always on.

Ah! I thought that you were talking about the main battery. I did replace the key fob battery about a year ago when the warning light in the instrument cluster indicated that the key fob battery was getting low. However as I said I had this problem from new. I thought it was something to do with how I was operating it and just put up with it. If it continues to happen I will try a new battery in the fob just in case.

Many thanks for all your thoughts everyone.

I use keyless. 2 beeps when you leave the car. And when I come back 1 button press and 1 beep its open.

Thanks. I will see if I can get mine to do the same.

Only time I get more than 1 beep is at petrol stations. It only gives 1 beep when I walk away, I guess I’m not far enough away to get the 2nd beep.
Then I have to mash the door button a few times to get it to open, it’s like I lock it with the first press and then the 2nd unlock it.

When I park up the car is left far away from my house so the key can not be in range. It might be confusing it if the key is kept closer, just a guess mind

Now, that sounds familiar. You have reminded me that it seems to always do it at petrol stations and I feel a bit of a fool standing there trying to open the door especially when somebody is waiting to pull up to the pump! I wonder why that should be? When my car is parked at home I put the key in a faraday cage pouch well away from the front door.

Yep, I feel foolish too, the car sounds like it’s tell me off for being dumb…

Maybe swap the battery in the fob. mine started being odd a while back and not locking properly, no second beep, battery swap seams to have sorted it. The fob battery would have been about 18 months old at that point

With walk away lock, it should beep once when the door shuts if the key is within range then beep again as the doors lock once out of range.

When I had the walk away feature enabled on my ND1 I am sure it locked when leaving and unlocked itself as I approached the car? Maybe you are relocking it after it unlocks as you approach? Disabled the feature as it’s a waste of time.

The mention of it happening at petrol stations reminded me of this:

Ah brilliant, so it is not just me! Thanks for the video. I think I will look into disabling the auto lock/unlock feature if that is possible, as I would rather use the buttons on the key fob. Hardly an inconvenience. Cheers guys.

Is disabling done via the MDZ display?
