Keys and key fob

Hi there on this cold & frosty morning…doubled the MX5 ownership yesterday with a Mk 2.5 to add to the Mk1, however there is only one key and one remote key fob (does lock, unlock and boot release). Mazda want nearly £200 to supply!!! They want £28 for a key, £10 to cut it and £40 to tune the new key into the car, the key fob is £106, all plus VAT. My question, any cheaper options to get key and key fob, can I tune these things in myself? Many Thanks, Julian.

The transmitter is coded with a series of switching the ign on & off and closing & opening the drivers door. That you can do yourself but you need a “codeword” from Mazda to register the ignition key. So that really is a dealer only option. Where are you located? I believe, but have no personal experience of it that you can get immobilser keys copied at some key cutting shops so they don’t require programming.

Topic moved to Electrics forum due to content.

hi  regarding the  2-5  entry transmiter, mine says = lock =. unlock ,=  boot release,=  number  41804   recently i obtained another transmiter,  looks exactly the same as mine,  exept  it says  =  lock  = unlock, =  off, =  number  41703   question is,  would the spare one be able to be programed into my system, i only want it as a spare backup    regards  leemarb

I have a related question, having just bought a 2.5 (2003) with a key and a separate fob with three buttons, labelled lock, unlock, and a pic of a boot release.  Question is, is it possible to “upgrade” this somehow to a single key with the buttons within it, for convenience? Did Mazda make such a key, maybe in subsequent years, with integrated buttons?

I’ve no doubt it will cost a fortune from an official dealer, but just wondering if it’s technically feasible.

 Thanks!

Seems you have a Mazda 6 (or maybe 3) transmitter. The “Off” is to turn off the interior sensors. Look me up at the next event and I’ll have a go at programming the lock & unlock side of it for you, don’t know if it’ll work.

NC has a Jack-Knife key with the keyless entry on the handle bit. Not tried to code one to an earlier car though. It’s a lot of money to buy and cut one to find it won’t work!!!

Or one for an RX-8 [:D]

RX-8 has the boot release as well so a 4 button transmitter.

hi robbie,  thanks for the offer,  if i havent sorted it by the time we may meet up, ill take you up on the offer,  REGARDS  LEEMARB

in meantime anyone want transmiter number  41703  =   £20

Oh so it does, just looked at the better half’s key [:$]

Indeedy - hoped someone on here had tried. You’re all too busy driving yours, I’m still looking at mine waiting for the car tax to come through :frowning:

Aside from the coding, have you put the two keys together, are they physically the same? I’d say this one had a pretty long blade, I would have thought a newer model would be shorter.

It was a quick question, perhaps when I drive the damn thing I won’t care

I have just bought an Mx5 2004 1.8 sport…the keyfob has lock /unlock and boot…the lock unlock does not seem to work the central locking however the boot button unlocks the boot

Could be either faulty buttons on the transmitter or a fault with the keyless reciever or wiring to the door lock control unit. Does the central dool locking work off the key and internal buttons?

Hi Robbie…the central locking works with the key in the door ok…what do mean about does it work off the internal buttons…what internal buttons

I mean the lock/unlock buttons above the interior door release handles. My money is on a faulty transmitter although it does seem strange that 2 buttons have failed. Easy test is to code a friends transmittor to your car. Just need a friend with the same transmitter and someone who can code it. Where are you located?

Hi there…just wondered if you ever managed to sell the 41703?

Mine has just died

 Hi,

Sorry to add this so late but did you ever manage to get the fob with the “OFF” button programmed for a 2.5?
