As the subject title for this post says, when considering a MK1 MX5 imported from Japan, what sort of costs are involved in swapping the speedo over from KMH to a replacement MPH unit?
I thought that it was a DVLA requirement to change the speedo, but having seen so many for sale with KMH speedos, I must be wrong?
I’ve had quite a few Eunos imports over the years. I’ve had ones with an in line " gearbox " on the speedo cable, I’ve run ones with the kmh speedo, I’ve replaced dial faces so they read in mph and I’ve swapped a complete UK dial set into a Eunos. Never had MOT issues other than the odometer reading which is in km’s is usually shown in miles on the MOT information which is not a big deal. None of the “solutions” are expensive and don’t require much in the way of skills to sort out.
Forgot about the milage Dave I reset mine to a line of zero’s? ( based on if i’d been able to buy a brand new replacement speedo, it would be like that? The placebo effect of looking at such a low milage car clocking up miles was strange it’s not illegal to do this, only a problem if you try and pass the car off as low milage when you come to sell.
The simplest solution surely has to be swapping the speedo dial face to one that reads MPH? The set I fitted to my import was obtained from Autolink (I also changed the colour to dark green) - and shows speed in MPH, but the gauge obviously retains the kilometres recorded on the odometer (and trip) - and the dial face is annotated as such. So speed in MPH, and ‘mileage’ in kms.
You need a screwdriver a fork and one of these. https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/speedo-conversion-face-p-106.html Gone up a bit since I did my last one. I would be more concerned about the rear fog light and the tyres. Japanese tyres are not good
