Lambda readings

My 1.8 Eunos has just failed it’s MOT because it’s lambda reading is outside the parameters set at 1.061. CO & HC readings were OK. The car had been off the road for six months and the garage suggest a half hour blast up the motorway may resolve the issue, otherwise the talk is of a £50 diagnostic followed by a new Lambda sensor and/or catalytic converter. Is there anything I can do to improve it’s chances of getting through the retest. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

PS. does anyone know where the Engine Number is on a '94 1.8.

The engine number is stamped onto a machined surface that protrudes from the rear corner of the engine block on the exhaust side. It’ll be BP then 6 digit’s underneath.

You could try one of those miracle cure fuel treatments to see if it helps the lambda reading but chances are the sensor is kaput.

Lambda MOT allowable readings are 0.97(rich) to 1.03(lean).  Your reading could indicate an exhaust leak especially as other readings OK.

Give it a good run and check for exhaust or breather pipe leaks.

The MK1 1.8 is a ‘BP’ engine.

Sorry, repeating what Robbie already said, posts crossed

That’s my first thought - a little fresh air leaking in after the sensor could give that slightly raised lambda reading.
