LEATHER SEATS

What’s the best product (or popular one) for cleaning/protecting/nourishing the leather seats? I usually use autoglym products but will use any. Is there an all in one, does it just need a balm etc?

Comments welcome.

I’ve used the Meguiars wipes on mine a couple of times, and they seem to work well… They come up quite shiney to start with but you can then buff back to a more matt sheen if you want…

Have a look at: http://www.liquidleather.com/

They are suppliers of Gliptones leather cleaning/conditioners.

It’s also available on Ebay, great products that really improve the leather

On modern automotive leather it is pointless to use conditioner (or balms or oil based products that nourish) products as they cannot be absorbed into the leather owing to modern automotive leather having a clearcoat on so all it really does is sit on the surface attracting more grime. On older leather it was most definitely the case to clean and condition but not now.

Only thing it needs is regular cleaning (more so if lightly coloured to avoid mainly jean dye becoming an issue as well as ingrained dirt damaging the surface) and protecter (not you notice conditioner) this will help avoid moisture damaging it.

Well looked after and good products will leave a surface that is matt to eye showing it to be clean, anything that leaves it shiny I would avoid personally.

This is backed up by Mazda’s owning cleaning line up as well which only features a cleaning and protection product no conditioner based product, if you also look at other vehicle manufacturers they back this up as well.

My usual combination is either from LTT leather care in Harrogate Judy really has a lot of knowledge of leather and is always willing to help or use the combination of Dr Leather wipes or spray followed by a protection product such as Gtechniq L1.

The most important thing when cleaning leather though is NEVER scrub at it by all means use a small nail brush lightly. But if dirt is still there repeat the process lightly again until the leather is clean.

Hi Shrek,

I use the Turtle Wax Leather Cleaner £5.99 from Halfords on a damp cloth and it works great. It’s surprising how much muck comes off and it leaves it matt and fresh smelling.

As Ninja says most car leather is pigmented surface (like paint) these days compared with the old analine (through-dyed) type but it’s still important not to dry it out using harsh detergent as parts will become porous where it cracks a little and they will benefit from feeding.

I use the Gliptone cleaner + conditioner & get the best results by working the cleaner in with a nail brush.

Smells great too

I have just used the products from www.Liquidleather.com on my 2003 beige leather seats and they worked a treat. I have just bought the car and the leather, although not worn/scuffed, was very dirty, dry and shiny. Now they are so much better and they even smell great as Liquid leather conditioners smell of top quality english leather which will impregnate your leather with itsluxurious aroma. I would certainly recommend these products.

I used:-

GT12 thick concentrated gentle cleaner £7 and

GT11 Conditioner £8

money well spent in my opinion.Smile

Even if you don’t use their products, I would take a look at the website as it gives some great advice on leather care for all leather products, not just car leather. They also have a very comprehensive stock of genuine colour matches for all car manufacturers dating back to the 1920’s
