A run has been suggested into Lincolnshire to the Heritage Museum, departure times, meet points and general other information will follow in due course.
Located in beautiful countryside we should be able to string together a great cross-country run.
On the day in question the restored Lancaster bomber will be making taxi runs up and down the strip (1100, 1330 and 1600) with exterior and interior tours available and if you want to hang around until 7.30pm you can enjoy 1940’s entertainment with dancing to a swing jazz band!
Sounds like a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some great roads, great aircraft and of course great company.
Please feel free to show your interest and we’ll start a list, we’re good at that!
I’m posting on behalf of Barney Bear and either him or me will fill-in the details as and when.
Many thanks,
Kev and The Bear!
Latest news : checked the run this morning and can confirm its abut 56mls. Route is now attached, aiming to leave Starbucks Wisbech (postcode in route attached) at 8.15am. Potentially if this is too early check the route, you could meet up en-route if needed?
If anyone has any questions please let myself or Brian know!
I’m pleased to see someone else is doing this run, I’ve done it three times with the NEM, and two of them along with the Linc’s Area as well, which resulted in a great photo-shoot the last time. Like this -
I would suggest you ask Northampton, Lincs and the NEM if they are interested, that should get you more than ten cars interested, and will get you a discount if you can. Then you can do a block booking, they’ll treat you as special customers, and arrange a photo shoot similar to the above. You need to get there either before the first run-up, or between run-ups if you can’t get there before then.
And there’s a good canteen, serves hot meals as well as sos and egg sarnies, and we had a sit down event (tables pushed together) for the last run at normal evening meal time, fish and chips. Most enjoyed it, but I was told after that there was a better fish and chippie at a nearby village, but standard stand up chippy, no dining space. However time changes, and it’s back around 2007 IIRC when we last went.
The museum - in the hangar, is a great visit, and so is the control tower, seeing things like “wot they used to be” - back in the 40’s. BUT nothing equals the sound of four Merlins cranked up to 2,000 rpm, you’ll never forget that sound, it’s awe inspiring. For me, it’s a tear inducer, as I worked on Lincoln bombers at RAF Upwood (near Ramsey, Hunts) during my National Service, 1952 to 1954.
Taxi runs are expensive (so is aviation fuel) but you’ll get the feeling of power when it taxis, the whole plane trembles.
Hi Derek and Wendy, you are more than welcome it’ll be great that you can get along, and of course if anyone else from the Lincs area want to join in then that’s fine too.
Just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have another chance to hear those mighty ‘Merlins’ roar again! The experience of being in the mid-upper turret, looking across the wings and trembling with anticipation as each engine was started and then run up, is something I will never forget. There were 12 of us in ‘Just Jane’ and not a single one of us was able to stop the tears from flowing. Can’t wait.
And of course we went in the NC, roof down with the Dambusters March playing,(loudly), on the I Pod as we arrived.
