Load rating tyre choices

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __ load rating/ tyre choice

Sorry guys for asking but, tyres required soon and these are the options I’ve been looking at. I’m getting confused regarding the best load rating for my 1.8 soft top.
Choices are;
Uniroyal Rainsport 5 87Y
Yokohama Advan Fleva V701 91W XL
Kumho Ecsta PS71 91Y XL
All are 225 45 17 on a 17x8 rim
Any advice please ?
Although I know the Khumos are preferred on the forum, I’m just unsure of
the load rating.

Currently using Uniroyal Rainsport 5s 205 40 17
TIA

Hi

Look at the link below

I believe the recommended rating for the NC on 17" rims is 88, not sure which model you have.
You can go higher rating, but not lower.
It is my understanding that XL tyres are designed for SUV type vehicles, so stiffer sidewalls, may not be a good choice for a MX.
I an sure there are more knowledgeable people on the forum that can clarify this.

XL tyres aren’t really necessary on such a small light car that will only ever seat 2 people and a small load space. As already stated they will be stiffer, in my opinion needlessly resulting in a harder ride, twitchier handling due to less compliance and probably a little more noise.

For instance I’m using a Goodyear eagle f1 as6 which has a rating of 87y. This is a more compliant tyre due to the 215/45 I’m using (having a slightly taller sidewall due to the increased width) but still capable of carrying a load of up to 545kg a corner and a top speed of 186mph according to the spec.
I think I’ll be OK in the nc .
