Iâve made the classic mistake just purchased another mx and never checked for the locking wheel nut key now I need it nowhere to be found any body know of a garage or tyre fitter near to Bridgwater  Somerset that can remove the locking nuts for me
You could invest in this set from your nearest Screwfix

or Mazda dealers might have master sockets. There may also be an identifying code in the documentation if the car has any. But it could be a long wait to get a matching key.
Â
if you do have the code you can get a new locking wheel nut from McGuard

I had a problem and my remover broke, replacement came in a few days

Mazda dealers use McGard nuts (the best for my money) but there are all kinds on the market, and itâs difficult to find out which ones you have. If theyâre going rusty, then probably not McGard, though they do rust where the key pattern is, after several years. I tried a google search for âlocking wheel nuts removal toolâ and it turns up several, but having watched a Youtube video of a Lazer removal tool it makes you wince!
As the demonstrator says âIt makes you wonder why we fit them when so many tools are availableâ - food for thought. However, as it seems you need a power impact driver to use Lazer tools, it does protect against the
uneducated Yob intent on nicking them on the street - or wherever. YMMV.
Standard nuts on MX5âs are 21mm, but deep dish wheels need âtuner nutsâ,(19mm) so decide which size are fitted before you search or go anywhere.
I was going to buy McGard Spline nuts, but when I ordered them from McGard in Germany (official European distributor - no-one in the UK stocks them) I found the width of the nut was only grabbing the thinnest part of the wheel - not good for cornering! - Sent them back and bought standard 19mm nuts instead.Pity, as I imagine spline nuts are harder to beat.
There is a master set for the McGard locking wheel nuts as fitted by Mazda if your dealer has them.
Thanks all Iâve arranged to take it into a Mada dealership on Thursday seems the safest option also the most costlyÂ
Cheers allÂ
Those internal spline devises are generally about as useful as a chocolate teapot on just about anything. The McGuard internal âflowerâ nuts are usually hardened anyway.
The viable removal tool usually will need a soft steel key that you hammer into the âflowerâ. They come as part of a specific tool which is several times the cost of the cheap ones.Â
The Mazda dealer is the best option.
Nick - the McGard spline nuts are male, not female, e.g. the splines are external. The removal tool is female. Spline spacing is variable, so need a matching key.
And - still wondering who edited my post - âEdited by userâ - it wasnât me. Pretty sure I put Mazda standard nuts are 22mm (pressed the 2 key twice) now it says 21mm. If Iâm wrong, say so, whoever did it. Did you edit your post Nick?
I edited it, if you click the edit it says who did it (or is that only Admin who can see that?). Mazda nuts have always been 21mm, I assumed that youâd made a typo.
Thanks Robbie, a for owning up, and b for correcting me - I was convinced they were 22mm, but as I havenât used them since I bought the Rotas, I guess I forgot over time.
Iâm on about the Laser removal tool.
Every âMazdaâ locking wheel nut I have come across has been the internal âflowerâ one.Â
Took the car into Mazda dealer job done ÂŁ30 plus vat including replacement standard nuts
Do people actually still steal alloy wheels these days?
I donât think its as common as it was but it depends on area
If you want to replace the locking nuts. Try the McGard sets on amazon.com. It works out cheaper to buy them from the usa and ship them over.
