Looking for exhaust to fit 475mm cat

Hi all!

I have a 1997 NA8 with the 475mm cat, the mid pipe and back box really needs replacing but I’m looking for an exhaust like a Cobalt but apparently it won’t fit mine.

Do you have any info or links to exhausts that would fit mine, like the Cobalt I’m after something that sounds better than stock but isn’t so loud that it will annoy me on long journeys. Any info would be appreciated if you have any! Thanks!

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 1997 NA 1.8 UK
  2. I’m based near: Shepton Mallet, Somerset

The Cobalt will fit but it has to be chopped and welded.

Jetex are listing a system for long cats

I’d say thats a good price. The Cobalt system, which is Taiwanese made, gets a lot of coverage because its cheap. What the Jetex has that Cobalt doesn’t, is a lifetime warranty

Have you got any further with this?

I’d be interested to know how you get on in your search for a subtle sounding s/s exhaust to fit with 475mm cat.

Moss have a discount on right now so I’ve bought a Cobalt kit (knowing it won’t fit). My wife’s family run a garage and said they’ll modify it slightly to fit.

MOT is due at the end of the month so its being fitted right before its test, I can ask what they’ve done and let you know if you want? I’m guessing they’ll just take a little out of the midpipe to allow for the longer cat.

Yes, please keep me updated. Thanks Ray

To be honest, whenever I see late cars with modified cat backs, the fit isn’t great. Better off having a new mid pipe made.

And you’ll have no warranty. Stainless steel exhausts do faill

Hi Ast, thanks for the link, have just ordered the Jetex for our late uk spec NA, awaiting delivery to replace our ‘holy’ centre back section and an ebay stainless back box with loose bits rolling around in it. Jetex have been in contact within half hour of placing the order. So far so good!

Please update us when you take delivery and get this fitted. I saw one by a company called Cybox that fits with 475mm cat.

Hi Ray, update on the Jetex catback for 475mm CAT late NA (1997 1.8). We had the exhaust fitted at a local indy who also carry out MOTs.

Sound: the smiles per gallon have gone up, and mpg down (can’t get my head around it?!) it is quieter than the last exhaust, slightly louder than stock, which is noticeable when revving, not at idle. It rasps quite nicely up into the higher revs. Has a pop or two in second, when letting off from high revs, only when well warm.

Fitment: for me the tail pipe could be a couple of inches further back into the body.. am being fussy as this would leave the bottom of the tail pipe just and inch plus proud of the bumper. It’s currently 2 - 3 inches. The mid section and back box do not hang out low and the angle of the tailpipe is straight out facing back.

Value for money: There are more expensive products out there, also products that are cheaper. I think this is a good mid range cost cat back for the NA. Welds are tidy, it’s 2.5” internal diameter all the way, with one back box silencer. We had the emissions test carried out and results were still below MOT requirement.. pleased with the purchase so far, all the best, Ben

Thanks for that comprehensive review Ben. Together with your comments I’ll take a look at their website.

Idea was to pick one up over winter months and fit it myself along with new cat I already have, ready for getting back on road and MOT in spring.

Regards Ray :+1:

All the best with your upcoming plans Ray. Update, after around 250 miles in, there is no popping (not sure how that occurred!) we too had a new CAT fitted, a mid range replacement. This was 485mm long and caused the projection at the rear. We also had a new heat shield at the rear box for good measure. This exhaust had added some nice refinement across the rev range. With Regards, Ben

Thanks for the further update Ben. Glad all is settling in and going well. The heat shield is a good shout. I might get one in ready for when I start on the exhaust :+1:

Have heard of folk taking old heat shield off (on the engine exhaust manifold) prepping surface rust away and placing some sort of paint that you then ‘bake’ in the oven to set it off. We didn’t have a chance for that as had it fitted. Anyway, all the best Ray
