Looking for guide to replacing ABS sensor

Hi,

My Front Right ABS wheel speed sensor failed last year and it cost ~£270 to fit a new one.  The FL sensor has now also failed and I’ve got hold of a second-hand one to fit myself.

The replacement still has the upright fitted at the wheel end, so in order to fit this, I understand I need to remove wheel, caliper, ARB mount, and then remove the track rod end nut & both ball joint nuts to remove the old upright & replace with the new one.  I’m hoping I can manage this but would prefer to follow a guide!

I’ve searched this and other forums with no success.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks,

James

I can’t find a FAQ on here…you have the perfect chance to make one! Big Smile

You have the right general idea. Wheel off, caliper and disc off, TRE off (mark it first), ARB off, top and bottom balljoints (these take a firm clout with a big hammer + bravery + fingers crossed, or a scissor-type balljoint splitter), carrier off (shoulda taken the wire off before now) then back together in reverse and take it for tracking to be done. Trickiest bit is the balljoints, but a standard balljoint replacement guide should be easy to find if you need it, or someone here will help if you’r stuck.

You will just need to unplug it from the engine bay inner wing, pop the grommet out, follow the wire down into the wheel arch, unbolt the brackets that hold the wire and unbolt the sensor, you will not miss it when you stick your head in there, support on a axle stand, with handbrake on and chock the wheels for saftey, easy job as long as the bolts don’t snap.

The October issue of Soft Top Hardtop (The Owners Club’s magazine) has a guide to replacing a front wheel speed sensor. It discribes the procedure for changing just the sensor though not the complete upright so probably no good to you. As you are probably aware, you’ll struggle to get a sensor out of an upright in one piece.

I’ve got the workshop manual and it says it’s just four bolts, but yes I hear that sensors usually break in removal which is why the breakers sell them with the hub plate thing still attached.  I’m worried I’ll start this job, have a couple of bolts shear off, and then be stuck!

Changing the complete upright should cause you any grief with regard to breaking bolts. If the ABS sensor bracket bolts look too rust and might shear off I bend the clamp part of the bracket and remove the wire from it then fit the new sensor wire to the original brackets.
