Looking for rust in all the wrong places

Hi there, new to the club and on the long and oxidised path to becoming an owner. Having read and watched various things about MX5 rusting, some friends let me borow their 2010 NC so I could practice looking for rust, and work out how to open the boot, bonnet etc! They were fairly sure their MX5 did not have any rust. Anyway, long story short, I found some, and now they have no idea if they should be worried! Neither do I. A couple of photos of the worst bits below. Would welcome comments and thoughts from those with more experience. Many thanks - Chris

I suggest they look here too, bottom of the rear arch where it meets the sill. Best if the arch lining is removed or at least lifted to have a look.

that is very savable but they need to act soon.
scrap off the old underseal. treat and stabilise rust then apply new underseal

This is where you need to look, as already mentioned. There are loads of info on here re rust treatment. Usually focussing on the internals - squirting proper stuff like Dinitrol into the cavities is essential.

Most underbody rust is surface rust BUT the brace bars can be a problem and easily replaced.

New MX5 viewing, new rust to try and judge. This on the lower part of one of the engine rails on a NB. How big of a problem is this level of rust in this location??

That looks very expensive to me.

That’s the biggest single rust problem on the NB. The whole section needs to be cut out and a new section welded in place. This is doubled skinned for frontal impact compliance and rust starts between the layers, once established there is no solution other than cut and weld. If you are lucky the next few posts will give you individuals cost for having this work done and maybe people in your area who can do the job.

That’s what put me off a mk2 corroded or patched up chassis legs would be very weak in a frontal bump

Two photos using an endoscope of the inside of the engine sills of an NB I looked at today. I believe they have been Waxoyled. Exterior of upper and side parts of the sills looked clean, as seemed the rest of the car. Does Waxoyl on rust stop the rust? Is it possible to tell how serious such interior rust is??

Thanks (again!)

…just checked the MOT history of the other car I viewed today, an NC Roadster…

aaarrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhh!

That’s rust inside those front chassis rails, I’m guessing it’ll be showing through to the outside too.

The corrosion forms between the two layers of steel so by the time you can see it on the outer and inner surfaces it’s already too late.

Yup.
Here’s mine.
Lovely stuff.

Bit nicer.

One man’s corrosion is another’s Sunday afternoon with a wire brush and Dinitrol.
Words are dangerous and can be misleading in MOT land. Sometimes a lack of them is even worse.

Found this on our Volvo 340 a few decades ago.
Twas an interesting find I can assure you!

I had a 340.
Built like a brick sh*t house, no power steering and had a tow bar that weighed more than my MX!!
The best bit was the wipers on the front headlights😆
