Looking for some MK3 detachable hard top buying advice

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK3 NC1.
  2. I’m based: North Dorset.
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on buying advice when looking for a detachable hard top for MK3.

I’ve been searching for a detachable hard top for my NC1 for quite sometime now. I’ve searched everywhere. eBay Facebook, Gumtree, Mazda dealers etc. I guess I’ve just not had much luck in finding one, but when I eventually do, what are some of the things I need to look out for that aren’t always obvious when buying a hard top?

I’m guessing check the corners and edges to see if it’s been dropped is a big one.

Some people have mentioned that their roof leaks around the seals. Any dead giveaways when inspecting? Or is it literally fit the roof and just hope for the best?

My NC1 is Galaxy Grey. Ideally I would like a black hard top, but would it make more sense and resale value to purchase a galaxy grey hard top and get it wrapped black instead?

Anyone have any experience with getting a hard top wrapped and the cost involved?

I’ve gone ahead and purchased the JASS Performance hard top fittng kit in anticipation, also it was the cheapest fitting kit I could find. If I somehow manage to find a hard top for sale with fitting kit included then that’s a bonus I guess. I also have the wiring extension for the heating element.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Also, if you own a MK3 with a detachable hard top and happen to be reading this, I’d love to see how your MK3 looks with the hard top attached. :sunglasses: Thank you!:+1:

My current MX5 is Galaxy Grey & has a removeable hardtop, send me an email via PM & I can send you some photos.

Used to own an NC, bought a grey hard top and wrapped it in black.

Very cool. Thanks for posting that. Great photo!

Any ideas on how long the job took and how much a wrap for the roof set you back?

Is a wrap quite durable as well?

I think I left it for a day. It was a while back. Cost…. £265.

We’re you happy with the finished result?

Very happy. Worked well for me.

They are not very common thanks to the prht model, but the curves are so much nicer than the prht squashed up roof. Good luck with the search, and yes makes more sense to buy a matching grey and wrap it black, then you always have the option to switch back.

You say you have an aftermarket fitting kit, there are rear trim panels specifically shaped as part of the genuine mazda kit. If you don’t have those you may have to butcher your existing trim.

I put a bit of info here if its a help: Hardtop details

Thank for sharing. I see yours and I’m still unsure about getting a colour matched hard top. I know if I did I could always get it wrapped black but… decisions decisions. Nice rims btw. Mine came with the same ones.

The roof was resprayed brilliant black ( originally silver ). I stayed away from having it wrapped after a bonnet on my t5 damaged too easily.

I wanted to get my red hardtop wrapped and I was quoted around 400 euros where I am. I tried doing it myself but it’s HARD. I also toyed with the idea of just doing plastidip but I lucked out and found a black one in the end. Why did you buy a hardtop fitting kit already? Both my black and red hard top came with all the mounting accessories already.

I used to own a Galaxy Grey MK3 and that had a matching colour coded hardtop, which I thought looked great!

Mine went with the car when I sold it, and the buyer was very pleased with it!
I now have a MK2 with a matching hardtop!
Hope you find one.

Very nice! I thought about plastidipping the chrome bits on the back of the roof black?

I bought the fitting kit from JASS Performance because it was cheaper as I was anticipating that maybe I could save some money that way by just buying the roof. I heard that the JASS Performance kit tightens the roof up a bit firmer.

I’m glad you managed to get the one you wanted. Red on black does look cool, but I think the black on black with those rims look :fire::sunglasses:.

Ì sort of like the chrome bits on the back. I didn’t even consider dipping them to be honest. I actually sort of liked the red top for a while but when I saw a brand new condition black hardtop come up for sale near me for cheap I raaaan. The dude I sold it to named his car Poppa Smurf for obvious reasons.

Thank you!

I’m actually really pleased to say that just a moment ago I got off the phone with Chris from Mortimer Cars based in Hampshire. :trophy::partying_face:

I was tipped off from someone on Reddit to give them a call.

Chris had one detachable hard top in true red.

Unfortunately it’s got some minor scratches after it was knocked over by some builders who were working on the previous owners garage.

He was able to offer me a deal I couldn’t refuse. The roof including a minor repair and a fresh midnight black respray for £850.

I am truly grateful. :pray::smiling_face_with_three_hearts::black_heart::fire::sunglasses:

Can’t wait to post some pics in a couple of weeks time when it’s ready for collection! :checkered_flag:

If he got white rims he’d be killing it!
